Kleiber learned to conduct in Stuttgart. He was the greatest conductor of the 20th century and was deadly serious about music. During his entire professional career, he only granted two interviews.

Arguably... perhaps... "Undoubtedly...?" NO...! He was certainly among the greatest... BUT definitely NOT THE GREATEST... There were many contenders... some still alive... But yes... I like him... & his work... 🙂 God bless all these masters... Blessed are we, that get to encounter them & relish in their work... Magic...! 😀

It's very difficult to call him "the greatest" if only because the rating of conductors is more shaded and nuanced than the handicapping of horses. More specifically re: CK. Both his symphonic and operatic repertory were, for whatever reason, so limited--without an Eroica, without a Ninth, without a "Missa", without any Mahler or Bruckner--that all evaluations of him must be tempered.

CK regarding this concert to Charles Barber: "I overdid the "no hands" gag, (Reference to Leonard Bernstein conducting with only his eyes) because there was a distinguished shitty colleague (I found out he was referring to Claudio Abbado) sitting in the box next to me and I wanted to show off, dammit. Luckily, no one was looking at me, and its only a polite gesture when they (the musicians) look up at you every now and then. Don't ask for it. You will also notice that the Seconds (Violins) are to the right of the Firsts, where they should be, and you will also love the wacky bowing in Brahms 2!"

Undoubtedly the greatest classical and romantic period conductor of the 20th century. His innate sense of phrasing endeared him to musicians to whom he practically mimed the music with his poetic gestures in quasi fusion with the orchestra. This concert was an excellent example of his unique gift. His fellow conductors all agreed "he was the best".

31:40 .... did you ever hear a more perfect "Anfang" (beginning) of a symphony ? With the emotional exceptions of the Furtwänglerian style, the inner granitic nudity of Klemperer, and the soft humanity of Walter ? I did not . But I speak here only of the pure apollinian form, Kleiber's Garden. And it's irresistible to me.

If we only had Mahler symphonys from him or some Ravel or even Stravinsky... Such a pitty...
I suppose absence makes the heart grows fonder. Yet true , but the conductors view would be familiarity breeds contempt. Still I love this almost unique pairing of these two over mozarts music.

@@alexandrebidaud3289 Well Mr. Kleiber was certainly not the chief conductor nor was he principal guest conductor, and there are reasons behind that. So I'm sure those reasons belong to him and the orchestras' alone.
