Still only 24 years old, Carlos Sainz has already covered plenty of ground in nearly four seasons in F1. Here, the Spaniard discusses what lessons he learned from his rally driving father, his move to McLaren in 2019 and how his former team mate Max Verstappen helped him raise his game.

It's so funny to listen to this podcast nearly 3 years later, I think everything he said in the interview aged extremely well. From only having shook hands with Lando once to having a great friendship, scoring his first podium in his first year with McLaren and ending up best of the rest in the constructors, in the next year battling for a win (but ending up P2) in monza, from saying that consistency was his biggest issue to then it being both his and Lando's biggest strength in beating Racing Point for P3 in the constructors, getting a Ferrari seat, scoring his first podium with Ferrari in Monaco on only his 5th race with the team. Even his friendship with max is much more visible now. He made the right call to get out of the red bull family when he did, going to McLaren when he did, and even when it looked like his move to Ferrari was going to be a disaster after how 2020 was for them, the team has taken a massive step forwards and they're battling McLaren for P3. I really hope things continue to turn out well for him and that more people start to see his talent. Everyone thought that Charles Leclerc would be driving circles around him but after only 5 races Carlos is already putting serious pressure on him. Love this guy and can't wait to see what he does next.

Carlos Sainz was inspired to become an F1 driver from watching Fernando Alonso being an F1 champion in 2005 with Renault, when Carlos was 11 years old. Carlos Sainz is driving for Renault this year and will replace Fernando next year at McLaren. It must definitely be a dream come true.

Ok, I realize this podcast was 8 months ago. But I must say, after listening to Carlos, I have a new found respect for the man. I've always had a liking for McLaren. And after last season, it was tough. The strides McLaren has made, and the drivers they've signed... it's a great pleasure to see what is taking place at McLaren. Not sure Lando could have a better teammate. I wish Carlos nothing but success. Appears to be a stand up human being. Great, great interview! Thoroughly enjoyed it!!!!

As a Brit I think Carlos will beat Lando Norris next season . I think next season in general is probably one year too early for Lando for an F1 debut . I think the the fact that Zak part manages Lando has got him an F1 seat next year over Vandoorne - Norris has been well in the shadow of George Russell in F2 this year.

Not sure he will go near the Red Bull family now. Not only seeing Alex go through it but I’m sure I read somewhere he said something about Carlos had told him what being a Red Bull junior was like and they both agreed he wouldn’t have enjoyed it. This meant Carlos could sign with McLaren and now that McLaren know it wasn’t Honda they have the resources to grow and become competitive with Carlos the lead driver. Think it’ll work out pretty well for him, whereas another 1 yr deal with Renault could have ended his career if Hulk beat him again.
