I'd like to add this comment about this guy. I saw him on the film Woodstock when I was 15 years old. This guy's throat disguise drumsolo was completely completely incredible. I couldn't get over he wasn't that much older than me. Then I played drums for years and I'm a singer songwriter with autumn hill records and I can tell you. This guy's drum solo was just absolutely to this day just listened to it. He was a great great drummer. I have a lot of respect for him and every time I see it on the old film. Is still one of the best? It's just amazing can't say enough good about him god bless you my friend

Was at the Santana show at Woodside High School, Redwood City (1967 or 68) that Michael Shrieve talks about being in the audience. It's a Beautiful Day ( White Bird) was their opening band. Santana's show was phenomenal, magical, full of energy, and still resonates. With Shrieve joining Santana and as shown by performance at Woodstock he increased the energy and magic exponentially.

I don't care if this 'dates me' but Michael, when I was a mere child, we both were. I as I walked into a place called the 'Music Odessey' on Wilshire Blvd in WLA looking for anything/something to buy to pique my penchant yearnings for rhythm and rock/Latin music, I heard Santana's first album and I heard you drumming on the Soul Sacrifice track, and I never looked back. I've tried and I've cried to replicate your drum solo to that epic song. Thanks for changing my life, and my musical excitements!

Nice to hear this story from the horses mouth! Inspired by Santana's performance at Woodstock, I actually played an outdoor concert in RI, opening with Soul Sacrifice. We had a very capable drummer and had the crowd on their feet, thanks to the popularity of that song. As a guitar player, I never got the chance to meet Santana but another star of the Woodstock concert by the name of Jimi Hendrix. Shaking his hand was a memorable experience and I believe I still channel his essence when on stage. I have since opened for Johnny Cash and Sammy Davis Jr and shared the stage with Merle Haggard, The Dramatics and The Pointer Sisters. The tour goes onward.

Oh, this is choice! I last saw Michael at the Seattle Pop Festival July of 69. I was "working" there at age 18 and have some great stories to tell from that 3 day weekend. Among them was going backstage (under the stage) and it was wall to wall creme de la creme of the best rock and roll had to offer. I'll never forget seeing Michael jamming with a snare, high hat and bass drum with Chuck Berry and... I'll be damned if I can remember who the other cat was, but it was so over the top cool to be there, a drummer myself, just trippin' through that moment and all it represented to me. And still does after all of these years. Thanks Michael, thanks to all who made that scene what it was and remains: inimitable. And kudos to Boyd Grafmyre who had the vision to ultimately become one of the great unsung Northwest rock promoters of that era; and who hired a couple of off-the-street hitch-hiking hippie kids for "security" in what became for them a very close-to nirvana experience much like seeing the Beatles up very, very close in 1966. Lucky us.

Great story! Michael's a great drummer! I always enjoy hearing about great musicians in their early years, because Ive always wondered if their skills were largely natural or from years of hard work. (I guess comparing my own unimpressive skill level to theirs. Lol). And when I see a young man not even out of highschool playing at such a high level,...I realize that most of these phenomenal musicians from the 60's & 70's have been blessed with a natural gift of musical talent.

Incredible musician that I was lucky to have crossed paths with.....The Saturday afternoon I walked on to the field at the original Woodstock and Santana was on stage.....Several times at the Fillmore East....years later in the back of my cab in the early eighties....Soul Sacrifice is a must listen at least once a year.

This is simple... 29,032... No one in the history of this planet has ever stood higher than 29,032 feet above sea level... Michael Shrieve stood atop 29,032... With his Woodstock performance NO DRUMMER IN HISTORY has ever performed at a higher level! Period... End of story... End of debate...

If you're asking yourself who is this guy? You really need to watch Santana at Woodstock, I believe Michael was only 19 yrs. old at the time, and he sounds like a skilled, seasoned jazz fusion drummer. He was absolutely amazing, and that (I believe, as I said) was when he was only 19 yrs. old. RPG.🚯☢

I met Michael at the house Santana had in San Jose in the summer of 69. I was a 17 y/o runaway and hung out with him for a couple days doing acid. I remember a party we went to in Redwood City and we were playing drums on everything all around the house! We had such a blast and he said I was a natural, lol. I seriously doubt he remembers me and I don't know if it's the acid haze or what but I didn't remember he was Santana's drummer until I saw the Woodstock movie! Michael is really great! I didn't start playing the drums until I turned 50 and 18 years later, I started getting more serious taking weekly lessons for almost 2 years now with a great teacher, Don Worth of Portland, OR who has some open slots for new students if anyone is interested. He has a funny story about Michael renting equipment out of his Dad's drum shop; he showed up on a warm summer day in a fur coat but he was cool! 😎

Taste and technique are what its all about on any instrument and Shrieve has both to the extreme. More than what you know, how it comes across, how it affects the listener is everything in music. I would call him a happy technician. ... chops forever! Saw him close up at a Louisiana festival and I'm having fun remembering how spellbinding he was. The Iron Butterfly drummer did a similar solo too but Santana featured the other percussionists and the Latin thing is big around New Orleans.
