Carl's trolls are very unique. Most trolls are instant punishes. Wrong move and that's a reset. Carl gives you ample opportunities to recover but just makes them hard to do. It psychologically scars the player more by making them feel personally responsible for every mistake.

If you want to get a clue of what programming in assembly is like (albeit on hardware that doesn't resemble real hardware), Zachtronics have published multiple puzzle games (TIS 100, Shenzhen IO, Exapunks) that are about writing in various fictional versions of assembly. I found all of them fun, though for real programming I like C++ (and tend to dislike anything higher level than that), so I'm somewhat accustomed to lowish level stuff from that. Of course, another option is to download lunar magic and just try making things in it. Less directed than games are, which has its advantages and disadvantages. So that there's indication that progress can be made, maybe there's a hub room with an indicator of how many completions you have between doing each room? Dying/failing takes you back to that hub showing all the indicators undone.
