Watching all the bats come out and circle the entrance before going out to feed on insects was probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen. When they're all out the sky is almost all black due to all the bats.

Oh how I need to go there, my whole youth I heard my mom talk about living in Carlsbad NM and that my oldest sister was born there, about there visits to Carlsbad caverns and seeing pictures of my parents there. My parents and my sister have all passed away and it just feels like a place I need to go ! Well a couple of days ago I got out my little sewing box to get something and there with my mending stuff is an old pinking shears box that I had kept of my moms stuff, I opened it and there inside is the “pinking shears Guarantee”, mom had filled out with their address in Carlsbad...505 S. Walnut, purchased at Yours Foods for $3.00 !!! Then I come to KZbin to watch “keepyourdaydream” and this episode pops up !! I think me and my Scamp are headed south when all this snow melts !!!

That makes sense about always tracking by their pre-staked pole in front and one behind. Reminded me of a story about a Nebraska blizzard in the 1800s. The teacher of a one room school house tied each of her students to a long rope then headed through the snow to their homes. They never made it, but were found the next day only a few hundred feet from the schoolhouse-sadly frozen. God bless them. They got disoriented together. Hindsight says they might have been better off staying put. All nature acts according to its own and respect is required from ours. But so is ingenuity, adventure, the joy of life and earnest desires to protect our loved ones.

Great video once again. I live in the area of White Sands, Ruidoso NM. Just an FYI, because you were there in Feb the dunes were cold. This makes for the best sledding. In the summer the sleds don't slide as well. When he was referring to the sticks, he was talking about the hiking trail that is located at the end of the road into the dunes. Its a 3-4 mile hike. Take water, sun screen, and a hat. Its a fantastic hike. Also, an important thing to know is the wind. Our area has high winds from the end of Feb to around end of April. This is caused from cold fronts going across North of us (Southern CO). The wind is sucked up from the South being pulled by the cold front. The parking is great most of the year. Its a large area. I would avoid the holidays, July 4th, Memorial weekend, Labor day. Oh, another tip. Admittance is free on these dates in 2017: (and its not crowded!) January 16: Martin Luther King Jr. DayFebruary 20: Presidents' DayApril 15-16 and 22-23: Weekends of National Park WeekAugust 25: National Park Service BirthdaySeptember 30: National Public Lands DayNovember 11-12: Veterans Day Weekend Sorry you guys missed our beautiful town of Ruidoso and Lincoln County. Come back another time to teach the kids about the Lincoln County war in the 1870s. It was a conflict between rival cattle barons New Mexico Territory. In the early 1870's two men by the names of Lawrence Murphy and James Dolan owned the only store in Lincoln County. It also involved Billy the Kid.

Another great video, guys. I was born and raised in Carlsbad, NM so have been there to the caves (as well as new cave) many times. I don't know if they told you (I only found out about four years ago) but your tickets to the caverns are actually good for two consecutive days. I only know because I'd made a comment as I was leaving that I'd misjudged my time, spending a lot of time taking photos of the caverns, and didn't have time to go through the Kings Palace. That's when the person I was talking to said, "Come back tomorrow! Your ticket is good for two days." I returned the following day to take the balance of the photos I had wanted to take. Sadly, Carlsbad itself does not have the same wonderful atmosphere it had when my brother and I were growing up. Also, for anyone who is thinking of visiting Carlsbad the traffic is really bad now due to the petroleum industry. The town and its roads were originally designed for a population of approximately 30,000 but now there are around 80,000 people on the roads on any given day because of temporary oil industry workers. As surprising as it may sound, traffic on the south end of town can actually back up as badly as rush hour traffic here in Dallas these days. But the Caverns are definitely a must see in my book. I have lived in NM almost my entire life and still love going to White Sands. Another very cool thing to do there is The Space Hall of Fame in Alamogordo, NM. It is only about 30 minutes from White Sands.

I know all about the missiles. In 1995 I was stationed on Ft. Bliss TX El Paso. I was a Patriot missile operator. And white sands is where the air defense artillary ADA does training excercises. It’s a beautiful place.

White sand is fun to go to tips: sunblock lots of it, also a change of clothes would be wise. The sand gets everywhere and will be all over your car. The sleds are also a must.

I know this is from a long time ago, but as someone that lives in Carlsbad, NM, you should have gone through Carlsbad and then up through the mountains to get to White Sands. It's a beautiful drive, and in Cloudcroft, NM, there's tons of hiking trails, snow sledding, ice skating, etc. It's just an amazing village, and White Sands is just a half an hour down the mountain.

The Great Sand Dunes National Park near Alamosa, CO has camp grounds and some really tall dunes for sledding down if you dare to climb them! There's also cool/cold running water from the adjacent mountains right at the base of the dunes!

Liked the video. Seeing the bat flight in Carlsbad is awesome to see. Whitesands is a great place. There is more to see and you where so close. Whitesands missile base is an Army missile testing site. They are always launching from the base south of Whitesands over the highway. Holloman AFB was just east of Whitesands and there is a NASA space museum in the town of Alamogordo. The high speed sled testing is done on Holloman AFB and the sled of the fastest human is at the museum. The monkey farm (that's what we called it) is where the fist monkey in space came from. Trinity site is far away but in the area. Also the Space Shuttle landed in that area. I spent 3yrs stationed at Holloman AFB and the drive from the base to Las Cruses always had DUI drivers. There are road side liquor drive ups.

My tip for white sands is heavy duty sunglasses. I was there last year in March and it was so bright. I am military so I was able to enter the white sand missile range base and check out some of their stuff. It was a great experience.

Once again great video. I have been to white sand's but not the caverns, next trip out west I'll mark the caverns of my bucket list. I and friends did go to New Mexico two years ago. We were out there on a razor ride trip and stopped by the white sand's and yes it gets windy out there. I had at point pulled over and waited for the wind to die down, it was plowing my 45' motorcoach and 24' stacker trailer around. keep the rubber on the road.

Yeah, I saw the sand screens by chairs and thought this would be a violent place in the wind! Your rig would fit in well with our Mexican caravan. Many 40+ footers and Razors. These guys are riding 3k miles on their Razer in one season.

the sand is dissolved gypsum that has collected as runoff from the mountains and dried. there is no outlet in that valley for water to wash it all away so when gypsum gets wet it dissolves and runs downhill with the water then dries out and becomes white sands dunes.

Great tip on the BLM . We did a RV trip from California to Dallas (driving our eldest to college) a couple of years ago. We took our time, visiting the Grand Canyon, Carlsbad, etc. It was a trip our kids (all 5 of them) talk about it to this day.

Hello, I have enjoyed watching your families adventure. As a father of three ( one girl and two boys:)) I have been inspired by your journey and hope to see some of the places you have been. I was wondering, how do you like your ford F 150 as a tow vehicle? Is it the aluminum body? And how well do you think it is holding up? Looking to buy a truck this year to tow our travel trailer that we are pulling with a mini van at the moment. As you can imagine it is a small trailer but looking to upgrade as my kids get bigger. I have been looking at Fords and Toyotas and thought it would be good see what you have experienced with your Ford.

Hey there Darin. Yes, as discussed in previous videos, I'm a big Ford fan it's the dominate truck at the RV parks. I do not have the Eco boost, but I've heard good things. I have the Raptor 6.2L engine. Left AZ with 62k miles and now have close to 85k without a single issue. Original brakes - only 2 oil changes. Pulls 9,200lbs up hills at 60mph, but I tend to only go 45-60 now. Not in much of a hurry anymore. If I were to do it again I'd get a diesel only so I could upgrade to a 5er when needed and they have better resell after 100k miles.

Ok, we travel by Prius a few weeks each summer and occasionally at other times (Road Trip!), and we have been Carlsbad Caverns FOUR times now. The first time was in the 60s, it was still an Air Raid Shelter with food and cots hidden in the rocks. The last time we went was in the summer so I could see the bats. The bats are great fun. And if you do in the summer, Remember your jackets. It is the same temperature as when you went there in the winter. It doesn't change. I got a nifty Carlsbad Caverns sweatshirt out of that. Who knew it would be that cold? They sell lots of sweatshirts in the summer. :D

You're welcome. I thought it was so cool that a park of this size was handicapped accessible. And it's worth going! In fact, even Zion has a paved path along the river that leads into the Narrows. You'll see it in the Zion video and there are clips of the path. And the valley floor of Yosemite is breathtaking. You can see Half Done, El Cap, Vernal Falls and more all from the car. But being able to go into the Caverns in a wheelchair was pretty cool.

That was fantastic! I most say my squad and I were responsible for some late openings at White Sands. I was a Nike Missile Electronic Maintenance SP5 .We always tried to get then off on time,but as you know things happen. We also shot them off at each other back El paso /White sands. That was in 1973-75

We did it just about once a week. We were support and training, there were 4 groups of us we each had units come in and train for two weeks.Then they got to shoot one off at a target in White Sands.The range went from ElPaso past White Sands.They have old bases in the Fl Keys that came once a year.

You've got skills and you keep getting better. I ended up with a Sony A7RII after 20 years using only Cannon Gear. Still using my Cannon lenses, and still have a lot to learn even after 20 years. You have a great eye for composition! My RV is still under cover for the winter, but soon we'll be hitting the road. We are looking for a nice 3-4 week adventure for the summer, lots of beach time, maybe some surf, not overpriced. What else is new... right! After seeing this, looks like Im bringing the snowboards this summer!

Keep Your Daydream still not sure. We are starting from north burbs of Chicago and heading south. That's as far as I've gotten into planning. :) wife wants Florida, I want Grand Canyon or other wonders of the world. So we are currently on completely opposite ends of the vacation spectrum.

Both are Amazing. FL is more RV Friendly. But humid in the summer. AZ is hot as hell and might be hard on the tires and engine, but beautiful too. You'll have the AC going in both states, so it's likely equal. You can't go wrong.

We tow a baby 18 footer & go out only in the autumns for 3 or 4 months. I'm dying to know 1) what camera are you using for your videos & 2) what software do you use for editing? I use a GoPro Session 4 for most of the footage (because its easy) but I have a Canon Rebel T5i for when I need good focus. I use Adobe Premier Pro CC and yes, it takes a lot of time. We probably spend 25+ hours per week on the vlog and would like to spend more... but work & school :) Keep in touch.

White Sands is my favorite place on the planet!! My husbands cousin lives in Las Cruces, N.M. and when we visit, it is always on the sightseeing menu! It is really cool to look it up on Google Earth! White Sands can also be seen from space! They plow it like we so the snow here in the midwest. It's 257 sq miles of gypsum sand. Just a beautiful, awesome place!!

Oh, thanks. There's a bunch of caves in Slovenia because of all the limestone. Postojna is one of the best developed systems with lots of cool history and even some ice stalagmites.

If you guys liked Carlsbad Caverns, you need to come to Tennessee. We have more caves than any other state. In Chattanooga, there's Ruby Falls, an underground waterfall that is spectacular to see and fun to get to. We also have Rock City, Up the road there's Cumberland Caverns where they hold Bluegrass concerts in the cave every Saturday.I know you guys have been to the south once already, but what are the chances you'll come back?

That one patrol car was CBP. I know cause i know. Cbp actually has agreement to stop or aide local LE there until locals get there. At times there is only 1 or 2 deputies on at night depending.

Thanks! Did you get my previous note replied to an old comment about the outside speakers? I'll paste here to: Okay... it only took me 5 months, but I figured out the outdoor speakers. Its controlled through the Fade setting. If you push the volume knob in it goest through Base, Treble, Fade, Balance. Adjust the Fade all the way to 100 and they should turn off outside. :)

I’m considering a 31’ trailer (hitch to hitch) that is 7295 dry weight and has a max trailer weight of 9995. Do you think the newer F150s could pull this?

Don't tell me you stayed in Whites City near the Caverns. It was a nice place when I went there in '95 but heard it had gone downhill. And do the Caverns still print the guide with the largest flash photo ever taken, covering 53000 sq feet!

You went to Carlsbad Caverns and only saw the Big Room? You missed the best parts. The Lower Cave tour is fantastic. The King's Palace is beautiful. Hall of the White Giant is fun and your kids would love it. There's plenty of climbing and crawling and squeezing through some tight passages. You should definitely go back and take some of the guided tours. They're all great!

We entered through the cave and walked over 2 miles and exited the big room. But most areas were so dark, there were only some areas that could be recorded.

Since the US trip ended, did you have any issues with your travel trailer that you needed to fix before Mexico besides the awning?

No, the only thing I did was replace the wheel bearings and buy an extra bearing kit and leaf spring. There are some items that need to be repaired (and I have some footage of the list), but I didn't do any of them. I am correcting some some manf. defects in Mexico with a body shop guy that comes to the park. Metal wheel wells and re-sealing the front cap that become separated on the right side.

One more point is that White Sands is NOT sand! It is gypsum, like drywall! I worked a lot at the missile range spraying the bombing circles! I miss those days!

Love your videos!!! We take a month long summer trip every year in our RV. Quick question: when you park Ginger in the streets to explore a new city, do you leave Maggie in the RV? If so, what about when it was really hot and humid? We travel with our dog also and I am always nervous about leaving him in the camper.

Great question. Yes, Maddie stays with "Ginger". We've been lucky to have 8 months of 70-80 degree weather! Feel back even typing that :) But Ginger is a 4 season trailer and when the blinds are closed, she stays very cool even on a hot day. If it's hot outside the car will be hotter, but the trailer will be cool. Particularly if we open a window on the shady side plus a roof vent. There was only one time we thought it was too hot... in Burlington, VM of all places. So we just took her with us. Oh, and in key destinations we had hook-ups and left the AC at 80 when we were gone.

Thanks for the reply. We pull a Rockwood Roo so it can get hot inside. Plus, we are teachers, so our travel time is limited to those HOT summer months. We have to leave the AC on for our dog Monte when we leave him. Can't wait to see this weeks video!

Las Cruces is very near and they have a lake called Elephant Butte
