He has one big goal to play these weird openings : to avoid 20 move memorized lines in common , sound openings. Carlsen is most comfortable when his opponent has to think himself instead of playing like robot. He also enjoys time advantage he gets from it 3:01 He already has whole 1 minute more on clock in 3 minute blitz game.This is huge advantage even though engine says position is equal .

That's why Rapid Fischer Random is great game mode(for example 15min + 3 min inspection before first move). Gives you time to think but eliminates pre-learned lines that you could learn in standard game.

@1allstarman 10 ай бұрын
I believe Magnus is trying to avoid falling into the Bobby Fisher syndrome where in the end of his life Bobby hated the game of chess because nothing was random , just repeated memorized move after move. By trying different ,and unusual openings he is keeping the game fresh for himself, and the games become more about reading the situation than about predetermined opening moves .
@BlindHatchet
@BlindHatchet 10 ай бұрын
Well it actually shows why you don't need Fischer Random as it only takes a small move to accomplish the same thing and at the same time preserve the beauty of chess that the board always starts from the same setup.@@IhmePinokkio

Only Magnus would find an obscure antiquated bad opening and bring it home while laughing all the while.

It's only bad if they know the theory, otherwise it's just another off book game that magnus tends to dominate.

No opening is really terrible, it's just not optimal against the best players. Many moves, like this one, are used in other openings in a different order so who cares if you make it turn 1 or turn 4? The bigger problem with these openings is the loss of flexibility early game. Going with a more mainline opening leaves you better able to react to your opponent while going with the Barnes locks you into the much more limited set of openings that include this turn 1 move. Fascinating to see bad opening moves thrown out there to try and change up the memorization game though.

I'm assuming Magnus prepares like this: - play strange opening vs stockfish - see if stockfish will mop him with human-like moves or weird machine-moves If weird machine moves -> humans can't find it -> play that opening

Computer evaluation is so often irrelevant. Even if Magnus plays a dubious opening and he does that often, the advantage the opponent supposedly have is meaningless if he doesn't cash in on it right away with a quick attack. Otherwise, of course a few moves later everything is back to normal. A blunder in the middle game is fatal. Playing f3 on your first move is almost never why you lose a game if your subsequent moves are not all ridiculous.
@mrpocock
@mrpocock 10 ай бұрын
That is the point. Titled players haven't memorised the stock fish lines for these trash openings, so magnus can stay alive long enough for them to blunder, or take them into a complicated endgame.

Magnus seems to be fooling around, experimenting with how much he can get away with (quite a lot, apparently, unless the other guy is named Hikaru). The thing to do was take advantage of the lack of king safety.

The idear of a dubious opening move is can the person play optimally enough to take advantage of it while at the same time taking account what Whites plans are. Puts the game in an interesting limbo outside of theory and for those ambitious to attack by finding natural moves from your opponents mistakes. Though impossibly difficult at this level so I reckon you have to be magnus to do this at this level. It's something you could only do if you vastly outmatch your opponent, which in itself is a psychological attack. "I think I'm a lot stronger than you"
