Why is everyone looking over the fact that Kerry Washington actually was being whipped for the movie and she asked to be to feel the pain and horror our ancestors once felt THAT is why that part of him singing was so powerful and real and why you see her truly feeling it when he sings. It was real for her and all of them in that particular moment of the film.

I was there in the audience for this awards show. They really did start playing the theme music while he was still speaking, but it was because it was being broadcast LIVE on NBC. This awards show was very rushed because it was live. Everything seemed so frantic during the commercials, and they had a little jingle that would play when an award recipient's speech got too long. Jamie Foxx kept talking though. I think I remember him saying more than what is shown here. And then after that, Steve Harvey came out and said a very abrupt "alright, bye everybody"or something like that. It felt like it was over before it started. But it was a good show.
