Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina discusses the importance of personal ethics to doing business, and shares her thoughts on being fired by HP.
-----
Carly Fiorina, former CEO of Hewlett-Packard discusses "Tough Choices," telling her own story, along with her unique perspective on leadership, technology, globalization, and sexism.
At age twenty-three, Carly Fiorina was a law school dropout who had no idea what to do with her life. Twenty-two years later, Fortune named her "The Most Powerful Woman in Business" and she was recruited to be chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard - the first female CEO of a Fortune 20 company - with a mandate to shake things up. And then her story really gets interesting. - Books Inc.
Carly Fiorina was president and CEO of Hewlett-Packard from 1999 to 2005 and chairman from 2000 to 2005. Before joining HP, she spent nearly twenty years at AT&T and Lucent Technologies, where she held a number of senior leadership positions.

Me too Plume, I was part of Compaq when HP acquired us and we all felt the same way as you do, she ruined our company and HP, and got a $20 million severance when she was fired.. She epitomizes the greedy at top level management in business today..

As CEO of Hewlett-Packard, Carly Fiorina laid off 18,000 workers. When reflecting on her tenure, she admitted she wished she had "done them all faster."

When you were trying to buy Compaq to bring short term results the son of Bill Hewlett told you that this was not good, many people pointed out that this was not a good idea but you played unethical games and got it done. This was the beginning of HP's decent to today's chaos. HP has grown fast before you came into the picture. The problems HP had was organizational, efficiencies and marketing but instead of fixing the problems you made the problems worse. You brought your YES men in the picture who brought incompetent politicians in HP and the rest is history.

Actually, you've got it backwards. Any man showing her level of incompetence would have been shown the door much earlier. She got a free ride for a long time because the board was afraid of negative publicity. -jcr

When asked about outsourcing workers to India, Carly Fiorina said at a press conference, way back before 9/11, "No American is entitled to work for HP." She got what she deserved.

This really kills me. She came to HP Roseville and was asked why she moved production out of Roseville and to Texas. Her response was, the Governer gave me a better deal. Oh wow, when i heard her say that, on that day, I about died. So many good people lost their jobs because they wanted to stay in California and not move to Texas. She is running for Senitor? She is not for the people of California. What a joke.

Its easy to judge someone when you're not in their boots. Tradition and values as you refer to (as the HP way) are grate things and should be valued, but its also important to understand the importance of change in an ever evolving world. Demand and need is what drives a business, understanding the market and trying to produce great products is more important than worrying how it affects you in an organization.

you know what... you guys commenting should first learn about what state HP was in before she joined and how things are now... If you guys were smart enough and had any self-respect or ethics of your own, you wouldn't be commenting like this. Every person has his or her own flaws, and every idea has its positives and negatives.. if the world was so sane enough, it would be at peace and not war... so think before you speak.

The comments for this vid only reinforce the fact that YT is a terrible place to look for helpful perspectives. It is basically a microphone for small people to imagine what it's like to speak w/a big voice. It's sad to see remark after remark evidencing no decency or professionalism (let alone fairness or depth of knowledge) berating this woman for her alleged misdeeds and lack of character. Would she get my vote? Not sure. I'll do my investigating elsewhere. But against Boxer, very possibly!

@TheModelification Do you realize that the oil we drill off the Gulf coast doesn't come to us at a reduced rate? It goes into a international pool and is priced on the open market , so it doesn't matter if we get oil from the Gulf or Saudi ..We use 20% of the oil supply in the world in the U.S. and we produce 5% of the oil ...Our little off-shore drilling adventure has nothing to do with the price , except what they want you to believe it does...

Its easy to bask in the heat of a success story and proudly take credit for being a part of it, but its wrong to hide behind curtains when something goes wrong blaming it on one person. When given a role of a leadership people expect you to show results and in most cases managements are changed if they fail.

@johnsax1445 Facts are best measured when you calculate in all parts. Let us start at the beginning when Carly was appointed CEO for HP and then watch what happened after that. What does the charts show you? When Carly was appointed the share price was, what? When Carly ended her career at HP the share price was, what? Don´t forget to calculate in changes in share volume. If the share price was worse of after Carly Fiorina ended her CEO position than before her appointment, you win.

ethics?? since 4/6 when very 1st tech made fun of my autistic son and hung up on me. extended warranty...tried to do everything not to fix it. only window to my boys world. management lies for him. the techs with true ethics who tried to help were all intercepted by managers. they wanted to system factory setting FAST, few techs did things to my boys laptop that can not be fixed by me. Since 4/6 ive been goin in circles. but the worst is Management lied to me. the tech who discriminated against my boy. his case # is valid. she told me its not & can not kno who he is. These r those ppl in power that have my boy so upset. not able to understand, just see's no one will help. Those who tried i hope still have jobs but now problem is they will be hesitant 2 do so again. Not to me HEWLETT PACKARD to me stands for the corp who laughs and humiliates those AUTISTIC , in fact the entire room was laughing. Then he hung up. so when i read Personal Ethics along side Hewlett Packard I feel ill. it is 4/26 and i have been tormented hav had his laptop ruined by the very company who should be fixing it. If only all those techs who were shocked looking at the laptop, hearing what i was able to tell them and trying to help b4 being stopped, if only they could come forward to tell it as it is. those words above will NEVER stand alongside HEWLETT PACKARD ever again.

She is the epitomy of big buisiness in Ameerica. The US buisiness model provides for the shareholders and top level execs. The regular everday employee is of zero consequence. Air Canada CEO for example earned in excess of $80 odd million but outsourced to India the customer service clerks. Please dont tell me he coulntd have accepted a few million less and kept the emplyees here working. As usual his success in profit building by outsourcing scored him the salary. PIG !!!!!!!
