Miss him. His songs were packed with scripture. He wasn’t afraid to sing about sin. Listened throughout my teens in the 80s and 90s.

I first heard Carman on a Saturday night on our local Christian radio station. They would play new Contemporary Christian music for us teenagers every week for 3 hours and have contest also. So they played "Lord of all" and I thought to myself, I didn't know they have that good Christian music. So the lady DJ says the 10th caller wins the cassette. My grandma had a rotary phone and I thought, I got to win that cassette. I was speed Dialing that wheel so hard, I thought my finger was gonna fall off. I ended up being the 10th caller and won the Carman cassette. I played that cassette as much as I could. I hadn't been saved very long. I was 15 years old and going to a Christian school, yet it was my best friends parents who put us in Christian school, not my parents. Our first day and going in to check it out, my bff's Daddy took us both. He was a minister and he wanted us out of the public school system because it was when they started handling condoms out to students without parents knowing. Our parents were fit to be tied over that. Anyway I was a new Christian when I got the cassette. I went to three different churches all my life, but I only wanted to live for Jesus when I was a little girl. I couldn't get to sleep one night no matter how much I tried. So I put my headphones on and started listening to my Carman cassette. This very song came on! So not realizing it, I begin to sing..I am in the pitch dark in my room when out of nowhere I start getting beat in the face, head, body,and wherever else they can hit me...It is my dad beating me with is fist. When I ask him why, he tells me I not supposed to be speaking in tongues!! I busted out laughing and told him, I wish God would give me that gift, but I sort of am speaking in tongues, but not what you think. They are speaking different languages in this song, I went on to tell him. I knew my mother had woke him up and told him that I was doing that.She always disliked me from the time I was born, because I wasn't another boy like my older brother. She had a name picked out for a boy and not a girl. My Daddy named me. Unfortunately, he did whatever my mother ask him to do to me, even if it meant kill me I believe.

@@kingtulafale Oh I am well seasoned Christian now! Married for 22 years, have 4 beautiful children, and even though I do have a lot of health issues, I do not let them drag me down. I learned awhile ago, no matter what, Praise the Lord!! I have had to have open heart surgery at 44 years old, I praised the Lord I made it through and had more energy. I had a lot of my left foot and toes amputated, just finally got the stitches out of the side of my foot Tuesday! I praised the Lord for HIS beautiful healing HE did on it. Now, brother in Christ, I need you to pray for me the Monday after Easter Sunday. I am making sure I am singing in choir on Sunday. First time choir is back in 2 years since Covid. They are gonna give me a stool to sit on. I have to have my 4th toe amputated on my Right foot. I didn't want my right foot have anything happen to it. It is a shorter leg and my main walking leg. I already have Neuropathy up to my knees. It isn't as bad as it was in the left leg since they put a stent in it and got blood flow back to it. Doctor said that is why my foot healed so well this time also. I told him it was Jesus!

Thanks so much for your ministry! I remember when in the early 80's I met one of your bus drivers in Va. He was changing a headlight on the bus. I offered my help, and he said he was ok, then he asked me if I had ever heard of you! Then he gave me several cassette tapes! I listened to them quite a lot, and then I passed them on to others! It's amazing how God has used you! After losing everything in 2007, on June 8th, of 2008, I went out to my lot and looked around and looked up and said Lord, I have a hole in my heart and I need to fill it! Then, I felt that I was supposed to go and do Disaster Relief and Ministry! I have been on the road now for almost 12 yrs. So I can relate to a lot of your sermons, and songs! I love how you make up the songs and how you relate to people! Thanks !!!! and God Bless your! Rick

Appreciate you sharing. This album was my childhood in the 80s. However, I now look back and am amazed at the arrogance of Carman seeming to claim that the Holy Spirit is not with the church praying the Lord's Prayer, and by extention is not with those following and worshiping God weekly and being fed spiritually in the Word and Sacrament. That is how God has worked for 2000 years and will continue to work until the last day, when Christ returns and brings with him the age to come, joining heaven and earth and finally making all things new.
@PeterGarofalo7 жыл бұрын
Hello Ryan ,that's exciting , I love the church, His bride & so eager for Jesus to come back, & we are gathered to meet Him . I find it amazing that God has been with 'christianity ' throughout history , when we got it so wrong. However as I study scripture & look at where we are now , it's not hard to see Gods sovereign hand at work. & all this time Jesus has been getting a place ready for us. A lot of what Carman does is very clever & I'm sure God uses it , that's evident , this world is so transient , it's celebrities & shallowness will pass away , we are all meant to to shine as stars , & the really great men & women of God are those who give themselves in secret prayer, in churches or at home, that faithful remnant.
@Norwalquero4 жыл бұрын
Hey brother. I hear what you're saying, but I think Carman was being a little playful with that part of the song/ narrative. Back in the 80's, and I expect it is the same today, it was common for Pentecostals to make fun of Baptists (and others) as not being 'full of the Holy Ghost' because they reject the perpetuity of spiritual gifts. And, trust me, Baptists (and others) gave it back to the Pentecostals just as strong, making fun of them for speaking in 'gibberish tongues'. So, again, I don't think that Carman was being arrogant, but was being playful toward those whom Pentecostals (like him) felt were God's 'frozen chosen'. At least that's the way I have always felt about it, giving Carman the benefit of the doubt. Peace.
@maribelibrahim85603 жыл бұрын
@@Norwalquero I agree. Carman was poking a little bit of light hearted fun. He never said that church (the ones praying) were not saved. He was just saying that he was looking for the Black church that was alive in the spirit. The skit was about the church being there for Pentecost Sunday. I absolutely loved the skit. It's hilarious when the "Spirit knocks" that Carman says, "They gonna call us Pentecostals!". That, again, was just a funny one liner. I am not a Pentecostal, but Carman's faith was real and genuine and he wasn't afraid to show it loud and proud.
