James Galways played this live in Sydney in 1988, in a concert for world peace. I recorded it from the radio and listened to it over and over again. I have just found this tape, and am making a digital copy of it while I search youtube for more instances of this magnificent performance. Thank you for posting this.

Lovely strong performance by Galway early in his career. I wish I had had the brains to have appreciated this great flutist, musician and TEACHER back then. I was too interested back then in smoking, drinking, speaking French and never thinking of tomorrow. When the pupil is ready, the teacher will come.

Just so we're clear, James Galway hates the term "flautist" (a sentiment that many of us flute players share). "I am a flute player not a flautist. I don't have a flaut and I've never flauted."-James Galway I myself prefer the term flutist & so do many of my fellow flutists. :)

At 5:48 his fingers get a bit confused 😊 Great RESPECT to James, it is wonderful because it proves that it happens and you move on 👍 Technique is just a blow!! But it’s hard to listen to this and be relaxed and really enjoy. Seems a bit Iike he’s racing against himself...

I have read most of the comments and have to laugh when I read comparisons between Galway and others like Pahud. When you get to their level it is simply a matter of interpretation and style. I actually enjoy listening to both Pahud and Galway, and many many others. Galway has earned the right to bring his own voice to the composers work.

The musicality, the pure beauty of his playing surpasses anyone out there. He is a unique and singularly talented musician. Others can have exemplary tone and technique. But Sir James Galway OWNS 20th century musicianship on any instrument . Sure there are super fast parts - bit isn't that what a piece with the description BRILLIANTE should have and yet he sings that melody through even those amazing runs. Full Name carmen fantasy Brilliante

When your band directors tell you to listen to professional musicians who play your instrument, that's because you learn a lot from them & pick up on their tone quality, technique, and musicality, etc. When you've been playing for many years & have been around musicians for most of your life, you'll reach the point where, just by listening to someone play their instrument, you can immediately tell who they studied with. :)

I absolutely LOVE Sir Galway and have seen him several times met and attended masterclasses with him. But as BRILLIANT as he is, this just sounds too fast for my ear. I don't think I've ever heard anyone play it at quite this tempo. Great performance though.

I'm not just saying this stuff for the sake of saying it. I really have studied with some incredible teachers/professors (one of whom is a graduate of Eastman School of Music). I really cannot emphasize enough just how important it is to listen to other musicians who play your instrument. I truly believe that you cannot get better if you don't take the time to listen to those peoples' recordings/live performances. You really do learn by example.
@thatchap Жыл бұрын
Totally agree… Listen, breath, watch, understand what it takes to be able to play like that, not just in your home but to realistically play at your best on a stage publicly, dressed in uncomfortable cloths and with microphones and camera’s pointing at you. I ended with a full-time flute playing gig for 34yrs and consider James Galway and Jean Pierre Rampal pivotal to my practice method way back in the late 70’s - never met them.

He is a very good flute player, no doubt about that. His tone is beautiful and very strong but I'm bothered by the fact that he seems to only care about playing as loud and fast as he can. He doesn't even bother to follow the dynamics in the piece. I prefer Pahud's performance over this one.

I agree with you, but I think the perfect sound and interpretation would be the mid point between Galway and Pahud. Personally I don't like the exagerated vibrato from Galway, but I like his brilliant sound. So... I think both are perfect for themselves, and when someone's trying to play for people's fun, you have to like yourself first, they do.
