In traditional hunts, a 1st-time hunter would be 'blooded' -- smeared with the blood of the animal they killed. Don Jose smears himself with Carmen's blood, as though she were an animal. Then he forces his ring back on her finger, another act of possession. This is a brutal portrayal of a brutal death. Kudos to the director & cast for an unflinching look at abuse & murder. And with such glorious singing/acting!

Calixto Bieito tiene prestigio. Pero como autor de esta puesta en escena es el responsable de que todos los demás elementos de una gran ópera se subordinen aquí a sus ocurrencias. En esta versión el argumento, la música, los intérpretes y todo lo escrito se ven trufados por tal cantidad de mensajes escénicos que la obra pierde su identidad y diluye su mensaje. Menos mal que Carmen sigue siendo libre, y que Elina Garanca sigue haciendo la mejor Carmen que tenemos en nuestros días.

Holy Moley what a production!! Kudos to the director for the little tweaks that make this so great -- Mercedes and Frasquita as a pair of very recognizable trollops -- the one with the gogo boots and ubiquitous bottle of vodka! -- the smugglers played as really very dangerous men, rather than for laughs. And what they did to the hapless Lieutenant! SO brutal! This has to be the most athletic Carmen ever -- it was electric, watching Don Jose and Escamillo hop from car to car in Act III! Both Alagna and Garanca must have been exhausted BEFORE Act IV started, and then they gave us more and more! I love the conductor's face after the finale -- 'holy crap! well, THAT happened!' I'm sad that this isn't available on DVD, or with English subtitles, but if you know Carmen really really well, then THIS is the production of the 21st century. Kaufmann at the Royal Opera in Covent Garden with Anna Antonacci in 2007 is the definitive version for the 21st century, but this performance should be on everybody's bucket list.

No one is scandalized by this staging. Their appalled by it because - it's BAD. It's all about the director and not the opera - it's just BS straight down the line. The conductor at the end looks like a moron. You want Carmen with these two leads, the Met by Richard Eyre is the way to go. Trash is trash.

@@haineshisway and why is it bad, if you please? Does it not portray adequately the sun-burnt Spanish atmosphere (even with Almodóvar hints), the passion, and the violence Bizet's work demands? As a stage director myself (and even a lightly conservative one), I can only recognize the aforementioned qualities and appreciate this production. If you have any deeper point than "it's bad" for disliking it, I'm more than willing to know.

@@venturateatro I stated why I thought it was/is bad - it's all about the director rather than Carmen. It's a director saying "Look at me, how different I am." I don't mind reconceived works IF it illuminates the score and text - this doesn't, not for me. There's a director called Barry Kosky (not sure I'm spelling it correctly) who does reconceived productions all the time and his I really like because he's just finding fresh ways to present things but still not shouting LOOK AT ME AREN'T I BRILLIANT! Just not a fan of this kind of thing. As I said, the Met production, with these same two leads, is brilliant.

@@haineshisway I agree with your premise, but not with the consequences. Directors shouldn't, indeed, overpower the material (as it happens with Kosky's Carmen). But I don't believe It happens here: on the contrato, I am positive that this world of cars meeting in the night, heat and sex, violence and colorful feasts IS the world of Carmen. It's a update, but the guy knows his references (again: linking Almodóvar with Carmen is a great call) but it doesn't get hermetic. For me, it's the second best contemporary staging of Carmen (the first is the Richard Eyre's you mentioned)

@@haineshisway About Kosky, I think his work os pretty irregular. He does make often that intellectual smartass move, but there are some stagings in wich he has actually something to say. Really love the Bohème he created for the Berlin Komische Oper, and I don't even like Bohème...

When they mention things completely different than what you see. We hear "take your sword", we hear about gypsies dancing and playing instruments, we hear about her accompanying her dance herself, we hear about a flower that is faded and dry (but in reality it's a fake one). And so on and so forth. Today's productions want to force concepts completely different than what is in the original work thinking that inserting modern settings/costumes/behaviours and as much obvious sex as possible makes it "original" and "fresh". And that what is written/sung doesn't count, it can be disregarded. But these costumes and behaviours clash with the language (I don't mean the fact that it's French, but the light and elegant style of the language), and especially with the music, that remains 19th century music. These characters, the way you show them, wouldn't express themselves with such a style and in such music. Write your own contemporary piece inspired from the same story, and it would probably work brilliantly. One example from many of the "dissonance". The smugglers being dangerous gangsters putting a knife on Carmen's throat and threatening to beat her up with a belt. Do the people who thought of this listen to the music beforehand or are they maybe deaf? The music is very light-hearted here, almost like an operetta, or as the background music of Looney Tunes. It totally clashes with the abject darkness we see.

Lo esencial está ahí e interpreta, al menos en mi país, a una mujer que cifra su libertad respecto del hombre sin importar cuán inestable (Josè) o superficial (Escamillo) pueda ser. Una mujer que define la libertad como desprecio a lo tradicional ( la familia, la patria, el trabajo) y pretende materializarla en lo marginal (el burdel/ la promiscuidad), en el delito (el narcotráfico, el contrabando) o bajo las luces, el boato y el lujo que le provee el dinero que obtiene por ir del brazo de la figura publica( el político, el cantante, el pintor, el millonario, el mafioso, el deportista). Un universo de corrupcion en el que todo cabe menos el amor y la libertad. Un universo machista complementado con un hembrismo que conduce a un único y posible desenlace: el feminicidio y el suicidio que anuncian las cartas y que en muchas versiones no se cumple.

Une excellente interprétation dans une production qui modernise Carmen. En fait, Garanča est probablement la meilleure Carmen contemporaine. Quant aux puritains dans la boîte de commentaires, ils sont les emmerdeures habituels et leurs protestations de vertu et de modestie offensées n'ont aucune importance.

C'est pas parce que ta putain de télé t'habitue à voir des merdes tous les jours que ça justifie qu'on présente sur la scène de l'opéra de Paris des scènes qui seraient passibles des tribunaux si elles avaient lieu dans un lieu public en dehors d'un contexte de "modernisation" d'un opéra. Tout le monde sait que l'amour et le sexe sont derrière cette histoire, ce n'est pas une raison pour en faire un opéra porno ! Et merde aux cons qui ne sont pas capables de comprendre la valeur d'une création originale. Ce qui ne retire rien au talent de la merveilleuse Elina Garanca.

HONTEUX !!! A la première écoute de cette interprétation (étant occupé à autre chose, je ne pouvais voir la vidéo ), j’avais trouvé cette version de Carmen particulièrement intéressante (avec quelques bruits qui m’avaient intrigués tout de même ). Malheureusement, quand j’ai voulu regarder la vidéo, je suis tombé sur le cul : le metteur en scène venait d’inventer l’opéra porno ! Et pas dans un cabaret de province, à l’Opera de Paris, s’il vous plaît. Comment les actrices et les acteurs, et même le directeur de l’Opéra de Paris (dont j’ai appris avec plaisir le départ anticipé) ont pu laisser, sous prétexte de "modernité", des scènes explicitement sexuelles, des actes qui pratiqués dans un lieu public seraient qualifiés ni plus ni moins que d’attentat à la pudeur. Comment Helena Garanca a-t-elle pu accepter d’enlever sa culotte sur scène, comment Roberto Alagna a-t-il pu accepter de se faire déboutonner sa braguette, que fait sur scène un homme nu au début du troisième acte ? Si le metteur en scène est un obsédé sexuel, il faut qu’il se fasse soigner d’urgence ; quand à la prétendue modernité, il ne s’agit que d’anachronismes stupides et inutiles. Aurait-il confondu un opéra avec un film à grand spectacle avec effet spéciaux et même le faux sang à la fin ? C’est tout simplement un massacre. Je me contenterai d’enregistrer la partie audio en essayant de couper les bruitages stupides, car je la trouve d’une grande qualité . Dommage

Moi cette Carmen que j'ai vu plusieurs fois ne me dérange pas mais je peux comprendre tout à fait que vous soyez scandalisé. J'ai juste une chose dont je veux vous parler. La présence du danseur nu sur scène s'explique. Auparavant les jeunes qui souhaitaient s'entrainer pour devenir novillero et torero étaient en général assez pauvres et pour ne pas abîmer leurs vêtements ils s'entraînaient nus dans la campagne face à des vachettes ou torillos. Je pense que la présence du danseur nu s'explique. Quant au reste, c'est la transposition dans le monde des voyous, drogue, alcool...... actuel. De toute façon, même dans des versions traditionnelles où c'est sous entendu, Carmen est loin d'être un ange!

Mettons les choses dans l’autre sens : carmen est l’homme et don josé la femme. On a affaire ici à une agression sexuelle caractérisée avec attouchements, si ce n’est une tentative de viol. Certes ce n’est pas la force physique qui est utilisée par Carmen, mais le viol par ascendant psychologique est reconnu par la loi. Je maintiens donc que c’est une honte que l’opéra de Paris puisse accepter une telle représentation.

Parece qué hay opinadores que nunca han estado en un cuartel o en un burdel y no distinguen entre una “ópera porno”, sexo explícito, y el lenguaje, los gestos de la soldadesca, la insinuación y la provocación sensual y sexual. Me gusto esta puesta en escena. La andaba buscando hace años pues Carmen es hoy actual, más que nunca, y es un GRITO respecto de esta generación de féminas que se muestra en el cine alternativo colombiano en “Las Muñecas de la mafia”, “Sin tetas no hay paraíso” etc... Podrá no gustarnos, tal como no nos gusta una realidad que sabemos que ahí está aunque nos neguemos a mirarla. El disgusto de la sociedad parisina frente a la puesta en escena en el Teatro de la Ópera Comique en marzo de 1875, debió ser la misma que llevó a que fuera descrita como “un fracaso rotundo”, acelerando la muerte de Bizet. Mojigatos hay en todos los tiempos.

@ patrick Szabo: Quand j'ai su que Elina allait chanter Carmen à l'Opéra de Vienne j'ai pensé que cette belle dame aux airs d'une reine, ne ferait pas une Carmen assez vulgaire et procace, mais elle a une grande versatilité, et ses gestes et attitudes (dans la version de Zeffirelli de la Staatsoper) et surtout ses regards étaient d'une efficacité admirable. Mais non, je ne voudrais pas la voir enlever sa culotte, ça me fait mal au coeur. Moi aussi je me demande pourquoi les grandes artistes ne refusent pas de se soumettre aux idées folles des régisseurs "modernes".

¿Soy yo el único que tiene la sensación que Garanca no está cantando una "opéra comique" sino un "grand opéra"?. Vamos, que no parece estar cantando Carmen sino Dalila. En mi opinión , absolutamente fuera de estilo. La "opéra comique", que además tiene partes habladas, requiere cantar con menos subrayados y además saber decir los textos hablados, y ninguna de esas dos cosas parecen posibles para ella. Compárese con el mismo montaje con Béatrice Uría-Monzón...o con la versión del Covent Garden con Maria Ewing y Luis Lima, la única en que yo creo vemos a un personaje que se supone tiene 18 años ..y no es Cleopatra ni Dalila.
