My favourite Carmen. Her range was such that she could sing mezzo roles w/o playing w key structures. She sings every note as if she were indeed Carmen. Furthermore, the beauty of her voice, not to mention her phrasing, is staggering. A completely convincing musical experience, as was Victoria's wont to do. Brava, Victoria!

You sound like you know what you're talking about. Yes, Victoria is classy! non vulgare. her phrasing, the utter beauty of her instrument , & French pronunciation is transcendent. Bing wouldn't let her do it @ the Met ( she did Lady Harriet instead)

+norman cascioppo Grazie tanto, for your reply. Again, i agree w you abt her sublime Carmen. There was also (amongst so many alsos) her Contessa (recorded in 1952 at the Met) was also transcendent and she was only 29! Not only, as you say, the sheer beauty of the voice alone but, again the elegant phrasing, her establishing just the right emotional tone, but she really SANG the recitatives! They are well supported on the breath, a rarity w even Mozart's recitatives.

the quality of any singer is judged by their Mozart. Yes, the Contessa: marvelous! Eh, Susanna, non vien. I think she also had great success (but not like Contessa) w/ Donna Anna @ the Met . I saw that she sung it w/ Eliz. Schwartzkopf.
