Fluidité, puissance, précision, élégance, expressivité Baryshnikov est le roi!

Petit is so good here, I love his very controlled 'brio". Baryshnikov 's passion and sensuality is a thing of beauty. However, MB looks like a ballet dancer doing a Spanish dance (albeit superbly), Petit looks like a Spanish dancer.

Mr Petit owns the role but technically is not at the top. Baryshnikov,is perfect,he is not dancing, he is living the dance. He IS the dance. The others are good dancers.

Always true of Misha. He is not merely dancing.

Mr. Petit brings a ominous demeanor to the role while Baryshnikov bring a youthful, even innocent passion. The others don't seem to,know what they are doing.

You're so right. Baryshnikov was my favorite and made a terrific contrast with Petit.

Thank you for putting together a comparison between these awesome dancers. This is my favorite male solo ever and it is amazing to see how each dancer has his own style even performing a same coreography.

loved how petit in person danced it

At least Petit's performance makes narrative sense. The others seem to flap about especially when working from. the floor when it seems they are trying to in effectually swat a fly. Gads, the last performance in this compilation seemed to be phoned in.

Petit was all man, Baryshnikov was sensuality on legs but as for all the others even Bolle who's my favourite dancer, I felt like Fran's dad in Strictly Ballroom watching Scott Hastings trying to demonstrate the Paso Doble in the backyard.

Bolle walked out showing promise, but then.....meh. LOL, love the Strictly Ballroom reference!

Thank you. The new bullfighting shape looks like Bugs Bunny ears, lol. Give me the old one any day. Bolle simplifies wherever he can and Zelensky marks half the time... And Legris (whom I usually like) is somewhat disappointing here :( But the others have what it takes IMO.

It's very difficult to compare when you have the choreographer himself dancing because he's doing it the way it's supposed to be done, right? so it comes to a matter of taste.... I also like that Petit's Don José is quite an older man, I like that, the image of an older and very "serious/grumpy/tipycal spanish" man whose life is destroyed by a (younger) Carmen, it's way more dramatic like that than with a Don José and Carmen almost the same age. Anyway, only the French should dance Petit I won't even elaborate on how awful the Russians were, and Bolle oh well, whatever lol 😂 in any case Le Riche for the win!

+Emma F Sorry but I disagree with your generalizations. Why should only the French dance Petit? (ALL Petit, or only Carmen?) Because the choreographer is French? Why not the Spaniards, after all the story is set in Spain, and the music has Spanish influences. There isn't anything inherently 'French' in the ballet's choreography or technique. And there isn't any reason to suspect that 21th century French dancers can identify better with a 150 years old subject, better than 21th century Danes, Russians, Americans, and so on. Why should Don Jose be an older man? Just because Petit was older at the time? The Don Jose in the opera is a young, honest and somewhat naive soldier. Petit himself was 25 when he created the ballet. The choreographer doing the role the way it's supposed to be done? There isn't only one 'right' way to do a role, I'm sure Petit himself changed his interpretation in the 20-odd years he cared to dance the ballet. You're probably a Le Riche fan and I happen to like him myself here (among others), but I doubt the montage was done with the intention to confer a winning award to ANY of the dancers featured in the video. There's only one thing I agree with: It is indeed a matter of personal taste (and sometimes prejudice) whether or not one likes an interpretation. Not a matter of dancer nationality or being the choreographer.

And no Carmen Solo with Tsiskaridze for whom Petit specially choreographed all parts (hence Solo) and he was fantastic?
