Can we just talk about how vastly different the pacing, writing, and plot got once the doctor and General were introduced? Fully felt like the first half was written as this gripping gothic horror with sapphic overtones, and then rapidly became "not now sweety the men are talking". Like I gotta wonder if La Fenu had someone read the partial manuscript and be like "hey dude, you're gonna get thrown in with Wilde if you don't tone it down"

In the end, Laura still thinks of Carmilla, her companion who abused her, gaslit her, and loved her. The human woman is telling us of her nearly dying to the vampire, but at the end still wistfully wishes to hear the vampire near. We all have fucked up relationships, but it's hard not to remember some parts fondly, and yearn for what might have been if our partner had been better to us or loved ones.

it's important to note that Laura had a wound of loneliness, yet unheard. it is that wound that makes us negate our own better judgement and ignore the deceitful Carmila. we tend to make the same mistake Laura did in our relationships till learn to value our self

Through multiple scenes, Carmilla has those periods of illness where where shakes and sobs, she was fighting herself to not kill Laura at that moment. Particularly in the scenes where the moon is bright, she struggles hard against her bloodlust, just to be with Laura. Carmilla must've had some form of deep love for her, as her other victims lasted three days at most, where Laura was still walking and talking at three weeks in. Maybe the most telling of Carmilla's (skewed, and unhealthy, albeit) love for Laura, is that she kisses her many times before she ever bites her... I mean, no one wins when a vampire has you in their crosshairs, but why couldn't we have this as a proper film adaptation instead of Twilight.
@jostockton.

It was lust. She barely knew her. And that you elevate Twilight to Carmilla by comparing them in an attempt to seem cultured is hilarious. It's actually okay for women to enjoy fluffy things. Not everything is about you and what you like ♥️

@@jimmyrutledge5115The fact that she only chooses female victims and plays a game of seduction that surpasses the limits of a friendship shows that this element is not overstated.
@jimmyrutledge5115
@jimmyrutledge5115 Жыл бұрын
@Ratchet2431 How and why do you believe that Carmilla only chose female victims? During a century of vampiric existence, do you think that Carmilla would imperil her own survival by ignoring available male victims? The story describes her as young, elegant and beautiful. Therefore, male victims could have been much more easily seduced and "drained" than females. The fact that the story focuses on two particular female victims in no way proves that Carmilla's prey would be exclusively female. However, as much of Carmilla's vampiric past is not covered in detail, the reader can, as with all novels, read and interpret according to their own discernment. Again though, great story, however one differs on interpretation.

Despite knowing exactly what was going to happen from the get-go it was an entertaining listen, like an old timey radio show. I never knew this novella existed until someone told me about it and I have to say it is more of a romantic horror almost akin to Dracula except with a more compelling base of characters. This was well worth the three hours of listening I did from hood to trunk because you feel like Camilla is manipulating everyone into her spell and what of her mother who was the obvious villain who was scouting out her daughter's victims by fabricating a story of her being hurt to lure in the victim of her affections.

SPOILERS! I feel such a lack of closure with this ending😭 they put so much time and detail into the relationship between carmilla and Laura and then they just killed carmilla without a single word. I so badly wanted there to be some sort of confrontation or even just a dying speech of some sort… like she basically was killed in her sleep (except she seemingly woke up to cry out in pain) but there was noooo closuree😭😭😭😭 I was literally on the edge of my seat, waiting for Laura to put the pieces together and have to face carmilla. Like it was just like, carmilla was a strange girl and then in the flick of a second BOOM she’s a vampire and also dead…no last words no time to process…damn… still liked the book tho🫶😔 fly high carmilla (or low tbh)
