Hi Ralph. I have worked with the Caruso Method for about two months and the results have been dramatic for only that amount of time. I am also using a relaxed embouchure and double C is now part of my range. I would have liked this method when I was in my teens as I am now 81. Thanks for all of the info keep up the good work.

Carmine was my grandfather in law. It was a pleasure to hear what you said about him and to carry on his method and legacy. For some reason I decided to Google him and your utube came up. Perhaps a thought from him in heaven. Thank you

Hi Wendy, Thank you for writing. I am so happy to hear that Carmine Caruso was your grandfather in law. Beside from being a great teacher he was a great man who always encouraged his students and made them feel comfortable. Maybe one day we can meet. Do you live in the NJ/NY area. You might enjoy watching my second video on You Tube. Just type in my name Ralph Davella then type in Carmine Caruso Lesson #2 the seconds. In this video I go back to the front of the building where he use to teach in Manhattan and share some memories about Carmine. Please keep in touch. Thank You again.

Thank you so, so much for these videos. Is the Six Notes exercise meant to be played first thing in the day, or should you already be properly warmed up before playing Six Notes?
@ralphdavella554
@ralphdavella554 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for writing. You may play the six notes first thing. It is perfectly fine though to vibrate the lips first and do just a little lip buzzing first, then do the six notes. Doing the six notes again later in the day occasionally will build even more muscle strength when you are working on building the embouchure strength. Otherwise doing them in the morning is sufficient.

Thanks for writing. Take a little bit from here and there. use your own judgement for the level you are at. I strongly recommend you practice my first and second video. Video number one is called The Six notes presented by Ralph Davella. Video number two Is called the Seconds presented by Ralph Davella. Those two videos should be your foundation to becoming a strong trumpet player.

Hello Ralph. Thank you for sharing all that knowledge with us!! I have a question.... I possess the Carmine Caruso book and in it it's written that on the "Six notes exercise" one should play the first note with tongue attack and the rest two notes with breath attack . Is it perhaps different ways to approach that exercise? Thank you very much. Eduardo
@ralphdavella554
@ralphdavella554 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking about how to approach playing the six notes. Happy to answer any questions. This answer can go on for quite a while so let me answer the question first. First note is breath attack: Second note is very light tongue: Third note is breath attack again: Part of the explanation for the reason for the breath attack is that their are many moving parts to the embouchure that needs to coordinate or synchronize and the tongue is one that can really throw that synchronization off when you are working on building the embouchure. That is not to say that the tongue has no place in building a good embouchure because it certainly does. But for these clinical exercises like the six notes and the interval studies it is important to follow the rules to insure the best results. Thanks You, Ralph Davella

It's a bit of a surprise that Maxwell didn't include any of Caruso's exercises in his book (I guess they weren't part of his daily warmup routine).

Thanks for the video. Doesn't the printed page show the articulation as B T Ku, but you mentioned B T B? Does it matter if the 3rd articulation is B or Ku?
@ralphdavella554
@ralphdavella554 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for writing. Yes it does matter that the last note is ku. The Ku gives you a new note without changing the embouchure or using the tongue. Keeps the lips vibrating. Added benefit is that after a period of time it helps you with the tu ku and tu ti ku articulations.

I have a copy of the whole note instructions. It looks like it was done on an old typewriter, not professionally printed. Do you know where I can get a copy of the full method?

@@ralphdavella554 the page I have looks just like the page you show in the video. It goes on to have a 'second week' where you go up a second on the middle whole note, and a 'third week' where you go up a third, etc. I'm wondering if there is more from this collection, do you know?

Hi Ralph,what is the difference from theese 6 notes and another 6 notes with ALL WHOLE notes that I've saw in your another video?Thank you Ralph.
@ralphdavella554
@ralphdavella554 3 жыл бұрын
Mario, That is just another way to do the six notes. I half to go back and look at the video but I think the six notes with the whole tones were to be played with a volume change. First soft to loud and back to soft. Then loud to soft then back to loud. This exercise increases your volume control.

A trumpet teacher that never played the trumpet. I think there are much better choices if you want to learn to play the trumpet.

I also thought that when I first started with Caruso. After the first lesson I never had that thought again. Other trumpet players that I played with would say to me can you get Carmine to give me a lesson. Many of these players had famous teachers but they still wanted lessons with Carmine Caruso. I will say that there is more than one way to become a good trumpet player. It is important to pick a good teacher that you believe in and practice what he teaches you no matter what method he teaches. There are great players that studied with Carmine and there are great players that studied with other teachers. Thanks James for bringing up this very interesting subject. Sincerely Ralph Davella

Thank you Ralph for the reply. I'm 68 years old and have been playing since I was 6. I've taken lessons from many teachers and have found some common things they all teach. A good warm up, Arbans, Clark Technical Studies, pedal tones and lots of technical etudes. I don't know what Caruso taught but to me these are the essentials if you want be a good strong trumpet player.
