The Carnaby's Cockatoo is listed as an endangered species. Between 1970 and 1990 Carnaby's Black cockatoos disappeared from over one-third of their former range. Now they are locally extinct in many parts of their former habitat. Between Autumn and late Spring, a small flock flies across our property from the west in the morning, and back from the east every evening. Sometimes they stop for a drink or a small rest before they continue. During spring they regularly visit Ellenbrae to feed on the gum nuts and seeds in the meadows. They always announce themselves with their shrill cry as they fly above us. We feel very privileged to provide a habitat which helps to sustain these beautiful creatures and always look up with a smile when they fly overhead.

It is wonderful to see and learn about these endangered cockatoos. They have a remarkable voice. It must be such a special pleasure to know they are flying to your property. Beautiful aerial views of the flock at the end. I hope their population is able to increase. Best regards, Cathy

Thank you Cathy. We have an area of approx. 40 acres on our property which we have fenced off and designated as a Voluntary Wildlife Sanctuary with trees which grow gum nuts that they love to eat. And as we don't farm on our land, some of the native grasses have seeds which they graze on in late spring. We are convinced that now the flock is bigger than it was a decade ago. We don't know whether that is because the birds have bred up or simply because more birds are coming here because their previous habitat has been lost. Although we hope it is the former either way we feel that it is positive. And yes we do feel happy and privileged whenever we see them.

When I was a child, there was a mature pine tree in the front yard of next door's house. Every year, a big flock of cockatoos would arrive and spend a day feasting on its seeds. That pine tree has gone now and we rarely see more than a few black cockies together.
@wildhomevideos

Thank you for your lovely comment Chris.I don't think you are the only person that has noticed less black cockatoos. If you are in WA you might have heard that about twenty years ago the numbers of the Carnaby's cockatoos were dropping really fast due to lack of nesting sites. Then a whole lot of people started making artificial nesting sites and since then the numbers have stabilised somewhat. We have noticed an increase in the flock size which visits our property in recent years but we don't know whether that is because they have bred up or simply because they have less places where they can find food.

@@wildhomevideos The Mundaring Shire has sponsored the placement of nesting boxes throughout the shire. They are all in use but not necessarily by birds. The one over the road has been used by red tail cockies. A chick per year.

@@chriswatson1698 That's great! I would love to have the Red-tailed nesting so close to our house. They are our favourite. We call them Knuckleheads because when you see the juveniles all you see is a huge beak! We are only 50k east of Mundaring and often go there shopping. I haven't noticed any nesting boxes but we have seen a lot of Red-tailed cockatoos around Mundaring. Not too many Carnaby's though. The Red-tailed cockies visit us too occasionally but we don't see them every day like the Carnaby's.

Thank you! They are beautiful birds, so graceful in flight. It is a shame that they are endangered but we are very happy that we get to see them. We have closed off approximately 40 acres of our property and designated it as a voluntary private sanctuary. They come to this area every year to feed and we believe that over the years we have seen the size of the flock increase. We don't know if this is because the numbers have increased in our area or if it is simply more birds visiting. However, we feel it is a positive sign and a confirmation of how even a relatively small area of land dedicated to nature can make a huge difference.

Thank you very much Trish. The Black and yellow cockatoos are quite similar to our Carnaby's. Some years ago the Carnaby's were put on the endangered list because their numbers were dropping fast, due to lack of old trees which they require for nesting. But a lot of people got together and even persuaded some local councils to put up nesting boxes and the numbers are stabilising. Twenty years ago we only saw a few of them flying over our property but now we see quite a large flock during the winter and spring months. It is really encouraging that people can make a difference sometimes and it is really nice to hear that your Black and yellows have found a refuge.

You must be burning the candle at both ends if you are on YT at that time of night! Sorry about blasting your ears off! The Carnaby's do have a loud call. You can hear it close to a kilometre away. Do you think the volume on our videos is set a bit too high? When editing I watched the audio levels but they never touched 0 on the meters. Usually they top at around -6. We have apple products and on our devices it sounds right, I have no idea what it sounds like on other devices. Thanks for your nice comment Jane. Yes it is a nice time of year when the Carnaby's are around. Not only because of them but also because the whole countryside is full of flowers, green grass and life. In the summer the countryside gets hot, dry and barren.

Here we can see how social birds are . Nicely done . I know chow difficult this all is to shoot . Do you use a camcorder with a small sensor or a DSLR ? I ask this as you did choose wether to close the diaph or une a small chip 1/2.5 of a camcorder as you decided not to have any bokeh in the background . ☀️☀️
@wildhomevideos
@wildhomevideos Жыл бұрын
We only have a Sony 4K FDD-AX53 Handycam which has a small sensor. We live on a rural property 20 km from the nearest town. All our videos are strictly filmed on our property only. We do this to show how much wildlife visits and exists on a relatively small area of land. We have many chores in our day so a camcorder is good because we can just have it with us most of the time while we go about our work. That way if an opportunity comes up we just grab the camcorder and shoot. The problem is though that although many of the birds and animals recognise us they are wild and not used to people. They are much more shy than birds you find in parks or reservations which are frequented by people. This makes it a challenge to get close enough to get good footage, especially with the limited telephoto lens of a camcorder. So for me the priority is to get a nice shot which is in focus and near enough to the birds before they fly away. Although I love a beautiful background bokeh I can not take it into consideration when filming with the equipment we have. Thank you for your interest and your comment

We have a large flock which comes to feed on our property so we get to see them quite often. They are also known as the Rainbirds because some people say that they bring the rain. We are fortunate enough to have these birds visit us regularly and they often stop at our birdbath to freshen up before they continue on their journey. But in many places where there were large flocks they have become extinct. I do wonder how someone with your sensuality and talent would approach creating a video like that.

We have black cockatoo in NSW. An old wives tale is they are a sign rain is coming. The amount of birds is supposed to be the days of rain and the direction they are coming from is where the rain is coming from.
@wildhomevideos
@wildhomevideos 7 ай бұрын
Yea we have that here in WA too. But I came across another story about that which sounded more plausible. Apparently before white settlers cleared substantial areas of land there were very large flocks of these black cockatoos. So large that when they flew overhead they would darken the sky like a large raincloud. We have never seen a flock anywhere close to that size but we do have this flock fly regularly over our property. During certain seasons every morning and every evening in fact. We don't get rain every day now do we😅 But we have noticed that they seem to be somewhat more vocal before and after we get a shower. If we put those two stories together it could be possible that this is how the Rainbirds nickname originated🤔 Thanks for commenting Linda

Hi Kate. Actually you don't get these particular black cockatoos in Queensland. Yours are very similar but the Carnaby's are only found in the southern parts of Western Australia. I don't think any of your species of black cockatoos are endangered like our Carnaby's Cockatoos. I don't think the Carnaby's are migratory but it can seem like that because they fly over long distances every day from their nest to their feeding grounds. And once the food runs out they go somewhere else. This has happened this year at our place. We have had the driest year I can remember. The trees which grow the gum nuts they like to eat look really stressed and the Carnaby's stopped flying over our place a few months ago. In a normal year we would see them fly over our house like clockwork every morning and back again every evening. Sometimes stopping for a drink at our dam or birdbath. They can be loud but now that we don't hear them we do miss hearing them. We have just had a nice rain event this week. Hopefully the trees will start to recover and the Carnaby's will come back😊
