Correct. With the rotary engine the crankshaft is stationary and the cylinders revolve. Quite conman in WWI aircraft like the Sopwith Camel and Fokker Triplane.

You say this first is a Chrysler 30 cylinder madea from five 6 cylinder Plymouth flathead power plants but the first part of the video is showing a two GMC Detroit 53 series power plants configured as one power plant block assembly both engines I have seen for my self, back in my per teen years, I'm now 80 years old this year. it seems that someone has confused the timing of video with the timing of Notices. I suppose that by now someone's 'splained the difference between supercharging and mechanical scavenging. Detroit Diesels like this, being mechanically scavenged, have that service provided by the Roots blower. Any supercharging would be purely accidental. FWIW some Cleveland Diesels (locomotive engines, much bigger) are turbocharged, having crankshaft driven scavenging blowers to run at low speed/power to get them up & going.

The Cizeta didn't have a central gearbox - it's a central flywheel and power takeoff to avoid flex from having a too-long crankshaft. The gearbox took power from this central point, but it was definitely not a "central gearbox, with a V8 on either side of it..." as there is no way you could fit two V8s _and_ a gearbox within the width of even a ridiculously-wide car like this (remember, the "T" in V16T stands for "transverse" - the engine is sideways across the car.) The gearbox was just behind the engine in the usual position.

Far too many mistakes here, so many it gets a thumbs down from me.. The Merlin is no crazy engine, it was a war-winning engine which continued to be used in detuned Meteor form in Centurion tanks into the '70s. Hundreds of thousands were made during and after WW2, there are lots of them around still. If you have lots of money, you can buy one and fly. The Commer engine was unusual, but not crazy. It was a successful and well-like lorry / truck engine of its day. Efficient, reliable and sufficiently powerful. I could go on, but it gets boring But, what is that pic you used for click-bait? Your bad research, or complete lack there of, gets an F minus as a grade. The Twin Six in the first clip has not been available since the late '40s as surplus; the straight six SC diesels it is made from have been out of production since the mid"60s- you can get a gasket set from specialty mfgs, but even pistons are made to order. Panhard as a brand died before 1960, no whole engines or parts available except through specialty brokers. The 427 SOHC engine in the clip was built by Ford to compete at NASCAR against the MOPAR Hemis- not in production since 1969, and even then only a few hundred ever made- the Kasse engine you refer to is from later model parts and has no kinship with it. You are correct- this video was shot through with errors, just not what you seem to think.

@lindamcentaffer5969 6 жыл бұрын
Aaaah the Wankel IS a Rotary. I think ya ought to EDUCATE yourself in this field! The only ROTARY engines used in airplanes, was in the World War 1 era, where the RADIALLY arrainged engine"s CRANKSHAFT was actually bolted to the firewall via a flange on the aft end of the crank, while the engine ROTATED around the crank shaft. The French made Gnome was a prevalent brand then, and the type was known as a ....ROTARY! The more modern types of "Radial - cylindered" engines, where the crank case is bolted to the firewall, HAS BEEN since around 1920, called a RADIAL engine. The Wankel has, because it's crank shaft is "weird," as long as I can remember, always been called a ROTARY. I have gray hair, and you're the first supposed "authority" in the field of engines I have ever seen get confused over this issue. Advice: when many people say you're wrong, research and learn. Then, ya MAN UP & admit it. Much more respectable that way.

That motorcycle is confusing the shit out of me. If that's not a radial aircraft engine, why does it look exactly like one. If it's a rotary aircraft engine why are the cylinders stationary? If it's a Wankel type rotary engine, why does it have a bunch of obvious cylinders? Are you ignant or have I gone mad?
@aussiebloke609
@aussiebloke609 3 жыл бұрын
He's ignorant. This is a simple radial engine. Mind you, there were radial engines that were referred to as rotary (before the Wankel design started using the term), but in those cases, "rotary" meant that the entire radial engine spins on a stationary crankshaft. It's an old idea that made it onto a few aircraft - biplanes, if memory serves - and the design didn't last long because the design limits RPM significantly.

R2800 "generally quite poor" - In what way? RADIAL engine with 2800 cubic inches and rated at 1500hp to 2250hp, depending on aspiration, water injection and fuel deliver systems applied. Was used in high performance FIGHTERS like the Vaught F4U Corsair, the Grumman F6F Hellcat, Republic P47 Thunderbolt, as well as several other high profile attack, bomber and cargo planes. Had more torque than you'd know what to do with and was reliable for 15 hour flights. No car engine could take the punishment an airplane engine endures. Quite poor - my Aunt Fanny.

Definitely GM 6-71's, The rocker covers (and the fact it's diesel) sort of give it away. Flathead motors don't have rocker covers. Plus the colour.

And another of those click bait videos. Didn´t see the engine from the thumbnail, except maybe for that red sports car from which we didn´t see the engine at all.

The first engine is a twin 6-71 GM diesel set I think some were used in WWII tanks as were the Chrysler Multbanks and Ford GAA along with some radials i cant remember which ones

Now if you want to power a tank, you have to buy an engine that’s hard to start, impossible to service, and costs more than the tank.

(1:40) - Title should read "Ford 427 SOHC", for Single OverHead CAM. (2:28) - That's a RADIAL engine, NOT a rotary! Rotary engines fell out of favor after WW I.

Radial engines were still quite popular in WW2 as well. One of the best known fighters used in the pacific theater, the F4U Corsair, had a huge radial engine driving a 13(?) foot propeller. All of the major bombers used in WW2 had radial engines, including the B-17, B-25, and B-29

@@daveogarf I wasn't arguing that point. You said radial engines fell out of favor after ww1. That simply isn't true. They had a strong presence in military and private aviation, even after ww2.

I couldn't watch all of this video. Primarily, because, in just the three engines you got so much WRONG! The only thing you got correct is that they are engines. Also, don't bad mouth what you no nothing about. I am an FAA licensed A&P mechanic. The piston engines, used in small aircraft have gone through extensive testing to be certified as airworthy. A GREAT deal more testing than any mass produced car engine.
