Keep in mind, the carnival captain doesn't sail the ship in and out of port, the captain from the pilot boat does. That collision was the captain of that port.
@kyles597410 жыл бұрын
The pilot that hops on/off a cruise ship is only on the bridge to advise, they don't actually have command of the boat. This is still on the captain.

The yelling and crashing in this is fabulous. It is the only part not marred by wind noise, and I LOVED IT. A strange assortment of sounds, too, like big wooden things falling on metal and odd clunks, when I would expect screeching metal, glass breaking, and shriller ladies' screams! VERY cool, thanks for posting. BTW, what did it FEEL like? Surely there must have been some mighty vibration or quaking?

Turbo, we were on our balcony cabin, but more forward....almost at the very front of the ship. We didnt feel anything when the ships hit. could you feel the actual collision? For everyone else viewing, here is my spin on what happened. we were backing out of the dock, when an approaching small thunderstorm cell all of a sudden grew into a much larger storm. I was up on deck 10 about five min or so before they untied from the dock, and the storm ahead did not seem to be a big deal to me at the time. However......on these cruise ships you have to realise that the longer a ship has to sit there and wait out a storm, then they have to make up for that lost time by sailing faster to reach the next port on time, and that costs them money. For most cruise lines, the profit margin is not all that large. So being on time is paramount to them. but yea it was kind of exciting because when 50 knot winds hit the large surface area of the side of a cruise ship....we became unwilling passengers on carnivals first and only sailing vessel.
@kellymc23911 жыл бұрын
You're quite right, E.Scanner. I've been aboard some smaller ships that used pilots, and the skipper always deferred to the pilot without question, since the pilot knows the harbor layout, etc.
@wazzawazza7314 жыл бұрын
As much power as those bow thrusters have (Legend has 3, you can see them working at full thrust), 50mph winds are very strong pushing against something with as much surface area as the side of a cruise ship.
@JackClarke9513 жыл бұрын
@pachucoalexander2010 enchantment was docked at port, and as legend came in to dock beside it, wind blew it towards enchantment, and there wasnt much the captain could do about it, cos the propellors with turny thingies on (forget the name) are at the back so no sideways propulsion at the front to counter the wind :p if they did crash in the ocean however, it woulda been an epic fail ;)

It was a very nice ship & I loved the balcony stateroom. Sucks that had to happen, though. Did you like cruising w/Carnival Cruise Lines? I'd like to take another cruise but Royal Caribbean is just so expensive! Thanks for posting! :-)

When 2 boats get close together it creates a narrow gap between them. Water flows much faster in a narrow gap than it does in a wide open area (think of white waters). As the water speed increases, the pressure decreases in the water. With lower pressure in the water between the ships and greater pressure on the exterior sides... the boats are pushed by the greater pressure toward one another. This is something that is nearly impossible to control once ships are that close. Its just physics

We were on the Carnival Legend that day. We were just pulling out of port, and a huge gust of wind pushed us across the bay into the other ship. Our balcony cabin was on the port side aft. . I watched the ship getting closer but still couldn't believe what I was seeing. We had to wait to get clearance that the ship was ok, then continued on with the cruise. When we arrived at our next port, they were already painting the repaired ship. Unbelievable.

Sorry if someone asked this already, but did your cruise just continue like normal after that, or what happened???
@Trentin.14 жыл бұрын
@231TURBOV6 It was the captains fault. Cruise ships have access to some high tech weather equipment and for the majority of cruise lines out there its standard practice to have a tug standing by if winds are going to be over 25 knots. The tug is just in case there is a sudden gust.
@ShippingHarbors15 жыл бұрын
You can see clearly that the bow-propeller from the moving ship was running at full speed. There was just to much wind to keep the nose in position. You can also see that the bow-propeller of the moored ship was running at full speed in order to push the sailing vessel away from it by forcing propeller-wash on the sailing ship. Even this wasn't enough to get clear.....

Cruise ships are very much wind affected due to the sheer size of their air draft and small amount of draught. A strong wind can easily move a vessel such as a cruise ship even with all the state of the art equipment onboard. I have seen this happen to VLCC's and they have very little air draft and approx 21m draught.

I've read several comments regarding the ship that was hit should have seen it coming and got out of the way as well as references against the captains, plural. For those that didn't realize it, the Enchantment of the Seas was docked at the pier. Even if their engines were running, lines up and were able to go; they had a dock against their other side. They were sitting ducks and were in no way responsible for the collision or able to maneuver out of the other ships way. Even if there had been a wind gust of 50/mph, any ship pulling in or out of a port is responsible for the safety of that ship and others around it. And a 50/mph gust of wind is not unusual, and the collision was avoidable.

No. They get on and off at departure. Once they are out of port a tug picks them up and transfers them. There only on long enough to bring it in and take it out of port. Hence always being a tug at the ships side coming and going.

@HAWAIIANSLINGR maybe you should take your blinders off .. might have better luck seeing the collision. It’s not a major collision, but it's a collision nonetheless. @Mattsana An inside cabin on RCCL is certainly more affordable, but I prefer balcony staterooms which go for $1000USD/person & up (not a suite, mind you, but the Deluxe Oceanview w/a balcony). Being a smoker, I don't want to have to go out to public areas for a smoke so that amenity comes w/a larger price. Carnival is lower-priced even for their balcony rooms than RCCL (around $800USD/person & up though they have fewer balcony rooms/ship on the routes I like to sail so availability is an issue).

A ship that big in 50MPH winds is like a giant sail. Add in the fact that being that close with no margin for error it was inevitable that they were going to hit.
