Interesting to note that it's nearly always only men leaving the disrespectful, supposedly-expert, scathing reviews. Too old, too fat, too this, too that. These same blow-hards are causing in-fighting and public derision within an art form struggling to remain culturally relevant. I got nothing but love and respect for these folks who are willing to do this much work, and allow themselves to be so vulnerable on stage, solely for my enjoyment. A thousand appreciations! 💚

As a man, though these days it's perilous to state, I found her singing impeccable. However, one cannot ignore the other sense, the visual, which for normal heterosexual males plays an important role. I remember seeing Diana live in Vienna in 2009 and the two images do not compute. True, though it is sexist to say, but I prefer the younger svelte Diana, to look at.

"Did you hear her voice cracked?" To all of you waiting for a slight mistake, let me assure you this: When you´re at work, 8 hours a day, you are not passing one day without a mistake - minor or even large. Would you like to be told by your boss that you failed just because of that? How would you handle your colleagues laughing about you? You´d probably retort "Everybody does mistakes" and you were right. See...that´s what makes us human. And I´m glad that even singers like Damrau are not perfect machines

I don't care how she looks, if she sings perfekt or maybe not the perfect one for this role: we watched this opera with her and she touched me so much. Could be that others would too, or that there are better singers, but she showed so much passion and just was so impressive to me - why not just be happy with that? For me, she don't has to be perfect to make this opera something special. I just loved watching her and listening to her so much!

Not likely - she already has the correct volume output - all she would need to do would be to A. Sing in perfect, enunciated German (already does that), B. Have a voluminous or piercing voice (good there on the second option), C. Have a more mature-sounding voice (again, done), and D. counterbalance great singing with great acting, so she's really kind of perfect for Wagnerian roles. I could totally see her pulling off Isolde in a snap.

And her voice cracked. Did you hear it? Where she had to enter on a high note all by herself. It shouldn't have been that difficult. The change in her voice is either a natural development to which she must adapt, or she might have sung too many taxing roles and the strain is now showing.

+puffsplus72 If she lost 42 lbs. she would be just perfect! As it is, her voice, expression and overall performance are without par.
@CalvinRE8 жыл бұрын
You must have a hard time at the opera in general. I know the Met would have to look far and wide to find a real teenaged girl with the solidity of technique, maturity of voice and acting, musicality and experience, let alone the degree of fame needed to perform the role of Gilda in front of 4000 plus people at the greatest opera house in the world. One thing I think that is in its favor, "grand opera" is usually performed in venues that are so large that age isn't that easy to detect in a live performance. The advent of cameras has made that more difficult in recent times, however. I for one would rather hear a great artist sing the role than a teenaged girl any day of the week, in this and any other opera I can think of. I let the grandeur of the music and the visual splendor of the scenery, costumes, and lighting transport me to a place where I can believe that Ms. Damrau is indeed a teenaged girl...albeit one who sings exquisitely,
@gramo638 жыл бұрын
+puffsplus72 -- It is indeed difficult to find a teenage soprano singing the part of a teenage heroine for an ENTIRE opera. However, finding a teenage soprano to sing an individual aria (not the entire opera) is relatively easy. Jackie Evancho can do that. Even sub-teeners like Amira Willighagen can sing certain arias quite well. But such youngsters performing the lead part for an entire opera is too demanding. And the audience would find such roles illogical.
@dianaemilia4857 жыл бұрын
No, Ramon O, they CANNOT do that. Where did you get this idea from? This statement is extremely laughable. The only thing Jackie and Amira and their likes actually are able to do is KIND OF hit the notes of certain arias in a manner that is not totally disgusting. That's all. They however can't sing with great vocal technique. They sing in a way that would ruin their voices in no time, if they had to perform as frequently and often as opera singers. And the technique is exactly the point. It's shitty. Amira for example is forcing and pushing her voice into the mask, singing with a high, firm larynx. There's tension everywhere. Same thing goes for Jackie: no good vocal technique, just different problems than Amira, but lesser. They would never be hired for ANY opera. Just because of their non-existent vocal techniques. And the next problem of course would be to work with them. Children. Teenagers. No conductor would want to have a 3-hour-rehearsal with a teenager. lol They also don't have any musical education. They don't know anything about the composer, about his style, about the epoch of the opera, they can't hide their stage fright like a grown-up singer can, which is why their performances are always so insecure and cringeworthy to watch. They can't analyze, interpret and act out an aria the way a trained opera singer could. They're in no way fit to sing on a stage like the MET. Not even a single aria. And that's exactly the reason why no opera house would ever hire them, not even for young roles like Gilda or Rosina, Zerlina, whatever. They would fuck up their reputation by hiring people like Jackie and Amira. It would be a shame to have children ruin masterpieces. And that's the reason why they don't hire them. Not their stamina. That's just a very tiny part of it. So....no. To find a teenage soprano/mezzo/alto to sing even a single aria in a style that is appropriate and tasteful and intelligent and musical and vocally perfect.....that is impossible. Which is why older singers are hired. There's a reason singers are told to train at least 10 years with a very good voiceteacher before their voices are ready for the stage.
@gramo637 жыл бұрын
+Diana Emilia You may be right in your low opinion of Jackie and Amira. But a lot of people pay good money to listen to them sing in their "not totally disgusting" manner. My statement may be extremely laughable to you, but those youngsters are also laughing extremely well -- on the way to the bank. But that's life -- rich people with poor taste are the ones who buy concert tickets to listen to untalented young ladies who cannot sing opera properly. And that is disgusting.

Why do people overlook basic facts such as, her complete inability to make trills & her inexpressive phrasing? Gilda is an innocent, sweet girls whose vocal warble is a result of her mesmerizations at the novelty of a new feeling--LOVE. Damrau sings it as a showpiece and is inaccurate at that too (listen to the hi-Eb's pitch, for example). Quite unimpressive.

Looks are as important as the voice In 2013, we no longer live in the age of Sutherland (PERFECT bel canto singer she was)due to modern staging,the voice is as important as the look.Speaking as a retired Opera singer,actress, Conductor.
@ethana.865310 жыл бұрын
Diana simply doesn't have a young voice. Her voice has sounded like a rather more mature singer's since she was in her 20s, and it has only become more mature and mellow as time has gone on. In other words: this is literally the worst role she could ever pick to sing. She should try Strauss or Wagner and give her voice something to really work with instead of trying to cram in into the Italian opera-sphere that her voice isn't naturally suited towards.
