Well, thank God they mention the author Patricia Highsmith. The raisin d'être of this film. And what guts it took to write AND publish the novel in the 1950s. A lesbian love affair w a happy, at least hopeful, ending. A first of its kind!

Homophobic , ME? That is the biggest laugh ever. So if I criticize a MOVIE about lesbianism because I consider Some aspects of the movie at fault--I don't even remember what I wrote--I am homophobic, but when I find faults with a regular or heterosexual movie, let's say TITANIC, What Am I then? You must be very dumb.

I watch this movie CAROL 5 times. Why? Because I was trying to find what the fuzz was about. I read the book, the book moved me sometimes, the movie never did, left me cold, and I am a big fan of Cate, paid $150 for a Broadway ticket just to see her in person in a play. But I am not going to say something is whatever because it is supposed to be for a certain community. And reading between the lines, something Rooney said about the movie, I think she feels similar feelings, but too polite to say openly. I had people insulting and blocking me because I said IT IS NOT OSCAR MATERIAL. I was right, not Golden Gloves either. It is not that great a movie, sorry.

The film is high art, no doubt and stayed away from ugliness. In the book there is a letter Richard wrote Therese, he practically calls her the scum of the earth, very ugly though Therese seemed jnaffected by it. I understand the screenplay shouldn' t be too faithful to the novel and the premise of two people falling in love was kept, but some changes I found dificult. In the novel Therese slept with Richard once or twice and she did not enjoy it she refused him, in the film Therese said to Richard " we haven' t done it all the way" meaning no sex or no intercourse. To me is significant that Therese feels the difference between sex with Richard and sex with Carol, I mean is a confirmation of where your true feelings are. Also in the book Carol kept pushing Therese towards Richard, maybe if she goes with him I can forget her kind of reasoning.
@AliceRiobueno8 жыл бұрын
+ana martinez ¿hablas español Ana? :) I haven't read the book, it's really interesting what you're sharing, and I agree, when it comes to adaptations, many aspects are relegated and it is understandable. In the movie the relationship between Richard and Therese seemed like it started 2 weeks ago, for her, and 3 years ago, for him, I don't know how is in the book, but in the movie I think it is a good translation when it comes to stand out that she fell in love with Carol immediately and started to open up and hang out with her right after they met, so, I think it saved the sex confirmation you mentioned it's on the book, I guess if they had put the drama between Richard and Therese, it would have been too much, so they opted for Harge and Carol, since she's the one with more "moral responsability", you know. Either way, it's a great movie, one can feel related to it and that makes you meditate. Really appreciate your share, thanks!

+Alice Riobueno (Myjeil) Did you finally read the book? It's so more complex, of course the film could not have it all. My problem with sex or not sex with Richard is that Therese did not enjoy it at all, they did it twice and both times she was repulsed or painful, and she told Carol too! Also, the book, Why they were together? Therese told Richard I like you a lot but I don't love you. What men stay with a girl on this condition? maybe I analysize too much.
@anairenemartinez1658 жыл бұрын
+Alice Riobueno (Myjeil) I think the script is kind of loose. ej Carol talking at home with Abby towards the end " I should've said Therese, wait". I was You should've kept your mouth shut, Carol, YOU INVITED HER. To tell the truth the whole road trip west in Winter too WTF?

I don't understand the meaning of "flung out of space," could someone explain it to me? Thanks in advance.
@anatille8 жыл бұрын
+Lucy Nathenson She means that Therese has appeared suddeny in her life, completely unexpected. It is a way of saying "who are you? where did you come from?" Carol is thrown off balance by meeting this beautiful girl. It is as if Therese came from another planet, suddenly appearing in Carol's life just when she needed her, needed her love. It is an expression of bewilderment, like "how is this happening that you are here, like you came out of nowhere and here you are in my life."
@JustinHenryfan8 жыл бұрын
+Lucy Nathenson It actually comes full circle, the line, in a latter scene, when Carol adds: "My angel, flung out of space" - it was beautiful. Like every line in the movie.
@miltdta8 жыл бұрын
What Anna Natille and JustinHenryfan ^^^^ said. The line makes sense both at the restaurant when Carol says "What a strange girl you are; flung out of space" as if Therese's whole existence and character have caught her completely off guard and during their love scene when she says "my angel; flung out of space" when by now Carol knows exactly how she feels about Therese.
@wrkhrse7 жыл бұрын
The statement "My angel, flung out of space" was originally used in the 1952 novel "The Price Of Salt" by Patricia Highmith. Several lines from the book were included in the alteration into the screenplay. I'd highly recommend reading the book and then watching "Carol" again. Although some parts of the book were omitted in the movie, the movie is still really good.

Alice Riobueno.
@paulafer4858 жыл бұрын
@anairenemartinez1658 жыл бұрын
+jessica jones Funny, I don't know. I am not going to get into discussions about the behavior of FICTIONAL CHARACTERS! It occurred to me because Therese is a child, and Carol is a tough cookie-- in the book she acted cold towards Therese at the end. Even the end, you would think she would've been devastated by Therese's refusal but she went on to her meeting.

Carol refuses to be a prisoner of Harge's love. You saw how his family controlled her. How can one live like that? When she said she thought Harge should have custody of their child -- my response each time is -- Game Over! Men typically do not want custody of their kids -- they just want to control you. You saw the look on his face. Just because you love me, does not mean you own me. It was a difficult decision to leave her child, but frankly men do it all the time... if Harge was abusive that would be one thing, but HE IS her father. Now go away and give me visitation rights or I will blow this sh*t up. It WOULD be ugly -- and the family would not want that! Men worry about women humiliating them. Women worry about men -- killing them.
@birdsong9857 жыл бұрын
TivoliEclipse wow we worry about men killing us damn i am a woman and that taken a little far Carols life was not in danger. To agree with above, its more then picking Therese, its what she is that she is choosing. She cant pretend to be something she is not. She tried and failed, she was miserable therefore she will be no good as a mother or a person. And like the last comment from the man hating fem, it does stop the control he had over her. He was dangling the child over her head to keep her imprisoned cause he didnt want to let go.
@1983DrNemesis6 жыл бұрын
No. It is going against the grain of who she is. She can not ignore who she is deep down, as she will be miserable and not able to be the mother she needs to be.
