Great to see Bob Herbert...miss his op-eds in the NY Times. This conversation is unsettling, but so appreciate Professor Anderson's investigative research and having this discussion in the public sphere.👍

Every ten or twenty years (I forget)the acting president has to sign a bill to okay or deny amerikas slave decendents the right to vote. Is this practice still in play? I think Bush jr. signed for last time.

With all due respect I must disagree a little bit. In my state for guv-the GOP candidate was head quite a bit of the night. Our largest city was held open over the closing time based on the event they ran out of ballots. So they held it open & then they got after the time remaining African-americans to come out late at night & that was the margin of victory. Question-how the state secty could not allocate in the first place enough ballots for the state's largest city? Really. Or did they only call on black people when they were needed. Also I see nothing wrong with requiring a voter ID. Allow any channel of fraud from illegals cheats all americans, including african-americans.

It sounds like you're saying that blacks were staying home instead of voting, but then the Democrats saw that they were going to lose so they put out a call for registered voters who hadn't voted yet to show up and vote...but you seem to be saying that's a bad thing? Isn't it better when everyone who is legally entitled to vote, does in fact vote? As to the voter ID issue, Professor Anderson talks a lot about it in this video. No one is saying that voters shouldn't have to present an ID. The issue is with which IDs make you eligible to vote and how difficult and expensive it is to get those. Many blacks in Georgia have a government-issued public housing ID...but those aren't sufficient for voting. The Georgia governor shut down the DMVs in many mostly-black counties, meaning that if you wanted to get a driver's license so you could vote then you had to travel 50 miles...but you don't have a driver's license to drive there and of course there's little to no public transit into those counties. Many people in Texas have college student IDs...but those aren't sufficient for voting. Concealed-carry gun permits *are* sufficient. Coincidentally, Republican lawmakers are the ones passing these laws, and gun owners tend to vote Republican while students tend to vote Democratic.

@@davidstorrs We don't know they were legally entitled. In other words, you do have to be legally registered in voting for offices below president. A presidential vote is allowed in any precinct (e.g. people who say are in the middle of relocating). But they did not print out enough ballots for the state's largest city when they should pretty much know what the count is ahead of time. We have a history of ballot harvesting in our state. The goal was to resort to Bridgeport to bail them out. The thing is Bridgeport, remains one of our poorest & crime-ridden ciites. Decades of Democratic rule have done nothing. The m/o is to keep the reliable voting base but not allow the avenues for the city to progress even to a C+ standard. They just use these folks.
