Nonsense. It's not about whether it's clean or not. It's about whether it's funny, plain and simple. This was a uniquely talented cast with impeccable comic timing. Case in point, "All in the Family" was on the same network at the same time, and it was anything but clean. But it was also wildly funny.

@capblood3046

You are right in principle about real laughter; but all live shows going back before Burnett enhanced that laughter and edited it, so it was not always totally 'REAL'. Also, canned laughter has been a party of broadcast shows since old-time radio days, not just today. But, of course, this show was a peach, enhanced laughter or not.

With Harvey and Tim on the cast list she had no choice. She was a consummate professional and tried to never let bloopers affect her performance and expected the same from her co-stars... not that that helped much... not with Harvey and Tim on the cast. Still, she recognized laughter when it was real, and the live studio audience overrode her professional desire for meticulously following even a GREAT script. If you haven't already seen it, look up the elephant story Carol Burnett blooper video. Tim at his ever loving best, ad-libbing while the rest had to sit quietly and take it, even though they all knew it was a busted take. ROFL... literally... check it out.

@@jimprice9703 - Her M.O. for the show differed considerably from Benny Hill's. Though Hill had his share of crack-ups, notably in Fred Scuttle interviews (and also in the Civil War "Home Is the Hero" sketch where both he and Bob Todd were overcome with the giggles), something tells me he would've laid the law down on Tim Conway, i.e. he wouldn't have been as tolerant of Conway's various tangents as Ms. Burnett was. Never mind that in their own ways, both were geniuses and giants of comedy.

@@wmbrown6 Benny considered himself the core of his shows and wrote (or stole) much of what was produced in his shows. He was also the core character (whichever one he was, in whichever sketch) He wouldn't share the spotlight easily.Carol was the total professional. She shared easily if it was in the script, somewhat less so if giggles broke character. But she also knew when to just let it happen.

Thats because they are having fun with their skits. Today people hides their laughs and doesn’t break character. Breaking character is what makes comedy skits more fun. I personally do slap stick comedy as a haunt actor. I break my own and other people character’s all the time. Add in a flare of creepy, funny and scary at the same time. Literally had random people play tick tack toe on my arm that i drew with a washable marker. I let them win some and i win a few. This was during room-escapes at my haunted house.

Oh yea, they are real professionals! I do not think they could have done any better with anyone else in the cast. They together made this show so wonderful to watch then and they still make it worth watching 50 years later. Thank you all for a wonderful job and for the side splitting laughter over the years

I’ve seen The Dentist skit with Harvey and Tim literally dozens of times and it still makes me laugh. Classic comedy performed by masters.

I love back in the day comedies like carol Burnett, flip Wilson and Sanford & son because shows in that era had live studio audiences. Shows now days have that annoying laugh track that laughs after every sentence.they even use the laugh track when something isn't funny.

That one simple physical ad-lib by Harvey Korman got Carol Burnett so good.
