You are right in principle about real laughter; but all live shows going back before Burnett enhanced that laughter and edited it, so it was not always totally 'REAL'. Also, canned laughter has been a party of broadcast shows since old-time radio days, not just today. But, of course, this show was a peach, enhanced laughter or not.

With Harvey and Tim on the cast list she had no choice. She was a consummate professional and tried to never let bloopers affect her performance and expected the same from her co-stars... not that that helped much... not with Harvey and Tim on the cast. Still, she recognized laughter when it was real, and the live studio audience overrode her professional desire for meticulously following even a GREAT script. If you haven't already seen it, look up the elephant story Carol Burnett blooper video. Tim at his ever loving best, ad-libbing while the rest had to sit quietly and take it, even though they all knew it was a busted take. ROFL... literally... check it out.

Thats because they are having fun with their skits. Today people hides their laughs and doesn’t break character. Breaking character is what makes comedy skits more fun. I personally do slap stick comedy as a haunt actor. I break my own and other people character’s all the time. Add in a flare of creepy, funny and scary at the same time. Literally had random people play tick tack toe on my arm that i drew with a washable marker. I let them win some and i win a few. This was during room-escapes at my haunted house.
