Yes. I think Tim purposely did not do a lot of ad-libbing during Family sketches because they were so well written and they also had this seed of tragedy inside them. He was a sharp fella; knew what skits he could go crazy with and which ones to keep his antics low key. But of course there was one notorious ad-lib Conway did with Eunice and Mama ... that hilarious bit he did as Mickey sharing a memory about Siamese elephants. That was in the Family "Password" sketch (in their eleventh and final season), a sequence which included Dick Van Dyke as Eunice's new romance, Dan.

It's my understanding that these characters are based on Carol's mother and grandmother and their toxic relationship. A comedic reflection into generational dysfunction. Funny but terribly sad at the same time. Guilt is a parent's strongest weapon.
@gabrieladerre28624 жыл бұрын
I was born with some sucky spinal problems! But the Lord must have seen fit to compensate me, with a quick, logical mind. So, the weaponized guilt, that the same elders that I loved and respected, and still do, almost always slid off me, like water off a duck! Unless, it was one of those rare occasions where I had something to feel a little bad about. Otherwise, it didn't work!
@gabrieladerre28624 жыл бұрын
On the rare occasion that my grandmother said or did anything to upset me, instead of letting me just take a few minutes or so, to get over it, as I was never one to throw fits, or be disrespectful, even while upset, she had a favorite line! That was "wouldn't you feel awful if grandma died in her sleep tonight, while you were mad at her?" I always did an reverse on that! "Wouldn't you feel bad if you upset me, and I died of some unknown childhood condition in my sleep? Even if I did, my soul would understand that family just some times gets to one another!" Or something like that! To her credit, she'd always tell me that I was right. And too wise for my age, and too smart for my own good! 😆 I should call and see if she remembers those incidents! I'm still a "grandma's baby," despite being a man in my 30s! I'll never age out of it! 😁

@@getyourkicks Supposedly the actors initially tried reading the first sketch script (when Eunice's brother Philip, played by Roddy McDowall who would appear three times in the role, comes home to visit the family) without any accent, and it failed to be funny at all. Then someone suggested trying something like a Texas flavor in the dialogue, and suddenly it was hilarious. The writers weren't thrilled-- but the rest is comedy gold. Plus, she doesn't see that what she says can really hurt like at 6:59. She reminds me a bit of my grandma, I love her, but she always says or does things in a way, or tells people what to do, so that everything turns out like she wants. Mama's house-keeping for her own home was no better than Eunice's. Like mother like daughter.

Thank you muchly! Now all YT's missing is: "Overnight Guest" (Dick Van Dyke as Dan Fogarty) "The Restaurant" (Eunice, Mama, and Ed go out to fancy restaurant. This is technically on YT but quality isn't great. Esp. sound.) "Home for the Holidays" (Alan Alda as Larry) "Visit to Phillip in Hollywood" (Roddy Mcdowall as Phillip)

The last one is on KZbin. I've seen it many times.

All of these are available on KZbin (except for a good copy of the restaurant sketch); I've seen them very recently, and I'm in the U.S.

As hilarious as these skits are, I still feel so bad for Eunice. She tried hardest of all to be a good daughter but it was never good enough or always backfired. Her anger and ranting in these skits comes from hurt.

Yes, but Eunice is the only one who can do anything about it. You can't force other people to change so if your happiness is dependent on how people treat you, you're in trouble just like Euince.
