Wow. We lived there for 21 years. The train used to be so much better. Parking was free. No one trying to sell you anything. And you rode on one side going to Nantahala and you switched sides coming back. That way everyone got to see both sides. We lived by Fontana Lake. Oh well. Things change. Thanks for the updates. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

Wife and I just did this trip. We were in the open air, Nantahala car. We had seats on the right side of the train for the trip out but our guide had everyone swap sides for the return trip. It was great fun and the food was great. Our guide, Steven, went the extra mile to serve and was a wealth of information and jokes. Made the ride that much better! The tickets still include free entrance to the railroad museum too.

Carolina Tony, Hi there!! Went on The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad yesterday. The weather was beautiful for the ride. I went with a group (tour) and I can tell you the coach seats are too cramped!! The group booked everyone in the Southland car. 2 people sit & 2 people on the other side. So its like 4 people sitting in a booth but with no table & definately no leg room. And I also found out that the open car with the bench; tkts have to be purchased for that also. No seats available. So going to the Nanahala Gorge I mostly stood in the open car. I would definatley go again, but I would have to upgrade to the dining car you and Ms Debbie had, LOL!! Thanks again for the info on the train.

My wife has her family name on a building at Western Carolina U. Her high school classmate and competitor has her name on the tiny town of Dillsboro. In the 60s their school was tiny and belonged to WCU, a college that owned the k-12 right in the middle of the college. Both girls were remarkably successful. Their whole class was successful. But the girls stood out. My girl is gone now after 60 years of delight. The girl whose name is on the town I have lost track of. I think they enjoyed the competition.

@@shelwhitley1011 Exactly! Kayakers need to practice "righting themselves" in situations where their kayaks are overturned. It's called a "kayak roll". Ideally the kayaker remains in the kayak though!! On the other hand... the kayakers may have been attempting to "stand their kayaks vertically" [without flipping over]!? It's a type of "kayak stunt"!

We took the trip about 10 years ago. Wonderful experience. Tony left out a few things, unless the times have changed. We booked an 1880's car which included first class food and service by a waiter with towel on his arm, a moonshine tasting, and included entrance into the train museum at the end. Do they still offer that? If so, book it.

@@CAROLINATONY And sort of "pricey" too! Maybe save that for another trip -- if you actually take trip down the Nantahala River. I highly recommend it! They have something they call "funyaks" [or at least they used to have them]!! They are basically one-person inflatable kayaks. But a guided trip is fine too, especially if you've never been rafting before!?

We left Pigeon Forge three hours early to go to the Railroad in Bryson City, the road across the mountain, Hwy 441 was closed thirty minutes before we got to it, the workers told us, we had to go around the mountain, we only had twelve minutes to spare when we arrived. Will never do that again, not worth the stress, LOL.

That is actually the old murphy branch it was not built for the construction of the biltmore house. It was completed in 1894 after the biltmore house and was built as a branch line connecting the southern railway to the L&N at murphy which created a connection from Atlanta to Asheville. The line was west of Sylva was purchased by the NCDOT in the 90s or early 2000s and leased to the great Smokey mountain railroad. Everything east of Sylva was operated by Norfolk southern until 2014 when it was sold to the blue ridge southern. Also that passenger car was not built for Amtrak in the 40’s. Amtrak was created by the government in 1971 to consolidate the nations failing passenger service

It’s possible that they may have misconstrued some of the information, I’m not sure. The railroads did have to donate a portion of their passenger equipment as part of the agreement to start Amtrak so it’s very likely that the cars were used by Amtrak and maybe the line was used help to build the house.

True. I think people have made comments like those for THOUSANDS OF YEARS, as "civilization" continued to creep in around them. Unfortunately... it's part of "progress". I like modern advances like the internet -- but also yearn for simpler times as well. Fond memories of youth are something to cherish, and pass along as part of our "heritage". Much of Carolina is worthy of mention, and the people of our state are generally TREMENDOUS! No wonder people are moving here!! [I kind of don't like that -- but... should we blame them???]
