The oldest gameplan in the book and still players do not pick up on it. Let the former player win the first set, and then allow the former player to lead in the second( by a break or stay on serve). Then raise your level and take the second set. By the time third set rolls around the former player is clueless and starts making careless errors and gives the match away. Wozniacki looked terrible in third set and was breathing hard. Kudos Timofeeva for executing the gameplan.

Exactly. Breathing hard, and she a fitness queen. Her post-match presser saw her being guarded in her self-evaluation. She would not admit she was gassed but clearly the much-younger (13 years) Russian girl was her physical superior. Might have been a wake-up call for Woz. How much do I want to keep playing girls almost half my age? Woz is/was a pusher. She could run and hit all day and wait for her opponent's mistake. Easier to do at 20 then 33. This is why the big hitters like Serena are the ones able to play till 40: Their game does not rely strictly on fitness and running your opponent into the ground.

So glad Wozniacki lost she has a real arrogance and personality. She thought she can just comeback and easily rise to top of women tennis. Caroline got a reality check. She doesn't got power Wozniacki.

Retired players want the fame back, that they decide to come out of retirement after three years and play pro tennis again. Thats fine. However, they need to go through qualifying and prove worthy of playing in the main draw. Giving Caroline a wild card was a loss of a valuable opportunity for another youngster who keeps knocking the doors at the grand slams by playing qualifying, just looking for that one chance to get into the main draw.

honestly the ole false dichotomy fallacy here isn't doing the conversation any favors. there are 8 wild cards, given for different reasons. and the sport is ultimately a business. it has to award huge (even huger this year) prize money, and make money too. so for some wild cards to serve the business model, and others to serve the purpose you're talking about, is pretty fair actually. this isn't heaven, or some idealized state. it's reality. and that's the way that things work. not always perfect, but for reasons that drive humans, commerce and all.
