Hi, I'm new to this and have heard the American bakers refer to sugar paste but can you tell me is it the same as fondant. I've been to my local cook shop and Tescos and they sell packets of ready to roll fondant icing - Is this the same and can I use it to make the figures as I can't wait to have a go! Thanks very much for the inspiration.

Can you use marshmallow fondant for more bulky figures? Or any for that matter or would they crack? I just got into cake decorating, learning on my own and just started using mm fondant bc its easy to make, so much cheaper than regular fondant and tastes better. Have you worked with it before? Or would you recommend something else for figures?

Do you add tylo powder to your fondant, I find my figures are breaking and sometimes seem heavy especially when making a princess body and head for my princess cake

I don't. If your figures are flopping it may be because the figures are too thin or the sugarpaste is too warm and soft. Allow the fondant to sit for a few minutes to harden slightly and make your figures nice and chunky!

I always use water to stick fondant models together. It's what I used when i first started experimenting with sugar and i have never found any reason to change. However if you prefer to use sugar glue then carry on. There is no right or wrong method in cookery - find what works for you and stick with it (if you'll pardon the pun!!)

The fondant on it's own will not be strong enough to support the golfer - that's why a lot of models sit on the edge of the cake. You can use an internal support such as spaghetti but it's still difficult. In "Fabulous Party Cakes & Cupcakes" I have a standing golfer. A thin fondant covered cake board stands at the back of the cake. The golfer is stuck to the board and uses it for support. Alternatively, stand the golfer on the board and use the side of the cake to provide support. Cx

Hi Lucy,to be perfectly I've never used Marshmallow fondant so I can't answer this question at the moment. However... I have just begun writing a new book which is about using fondant and MMFondant is on the list of things to investigate. As soon as I have - I will let you know! If you need to know sooner, google "Modelling with Marshmallow Fondant". This will take you to some sites belonging to cake decorators who use it regularly and who can help you right now. Hope this helps. Carol T
