I was a boy catering rating during 1955 on the Caronia. I was based in the Sandringham restaurant and assisted the Captain'd tiger. The captain was Captain Treasure Jones . During that time we did two cruises of the West Indies, a world cruise, a Mediterranian cruise and a North Cape cruise. What a fantastic experience

How glad I was to find this. Many Many thanks. I was a musician on the Caronia in 1963. For a whole year I cruised including a three month world cruise and got paid for it how good was that ! Cunard (and Captain Marr) were great to work for. We dined with the officers, freely mixed with the passengers. We had free access to any unused seats on tour excursions. I have many happy memories, photos and cine film for my old age !

One of the things that is really great about these 1950's travel films is that nearly everything that is 20th century - "or modern" - was in its beginnings in much of Europe, in Valletta, the whole city looked right out of the middle ages, with just a few modern things like motor vehicles and telephones starting to take hold. Most people are still walking or even using donkey power in many places, and ancient traditions, ways and sometimes even clothing are real life, not just done for the tourists.

It was really strange watching this as many of the paintings in this film, particularly the one of Prince Phillip and Princess Elizabeth (HM The Queen), are displayed on the legendary QE2. From memory I beleive that the painting of Prince Phillip and Princess Elizabeth is displayed on the stair case on the left side of the Caronia restaurant.

Who composed the music for this program? It's quite splendorous.

'Park your camel'. When I heard that I couldn't help but think of Popeye the Sailor riding the slow camel: 'Hey, you got four flats. No wonder you can't run. C'mon, camel!'

@ingledude I look at some of these modern cruise ships and wonder at the design and how they dont capsize. (there again some of them do !!!)

9:24 What is that man on the left doing? It looks like he is crawling along the side of the ship in an awkward and putting his hand or some object in the water.

They say you could hear the cocktail shakers across the water from Caronia.

A time when cruise ships were a logical size and of course beautiful design, not like the hideous monsters of today whose thousands of passengers are overwhelming the Med. ports and making them more like theme parks than real cities.

@ORobinHood1 Yes have lots of cine film. I recently bought a cine projector as my old one gave up the ghost long ago. I will experiment with filming the screened image or convert to DVD! Thanks for posting.

Too bad ships don't look like this anymore, when ships were ships, now, we get floating apartment blocks, although I'd cruise on one of the new ships anyway.
