Carp and Bass Flies: Tying the Dragonfly Nymph

The dragonfly nymph is a very aggressive predator of other insects and very small fishes. As it is an active swimmer, it becomes available to other predators. many species of fish will take a dragonfly nymph, including bass, carp and panfish.
This version is an easy tie that is designed to ride point up to help avoid snags.

Nice one Peter! A favorite go-to for mid-day off-bite fishing times - like to fish'em deep! There are some forage items that are always on the menu and it pays to fish their imitations, dragonfly nymphs are definitely one of them. As you suggest, it is well worth while to check the size and color of what's in the water shed. The local ones are "stubby" and short (about 5/8ths long) dark brown to black with a pale tan or gray underside in the moving water and longer/slimmer olive green in the slow water.

Carp by me are feeding on something but I don't see as many crayfish as last year.Gonna go tie something like this and try it in the morning.

Also try my beadhead squirrel tail as in the larger sizes it does a have decent job of imitating a hex nymph. I've caught a load of carp on that fly. They also like my Twitch fly in the natural colours.
