Mark Pitchers returns for the 3rd installment of 'The Challenge' and this time he has been set the task of catching a carp from a river! Having never caught a carp from a river before this is certainly going to be Mark's hardest challenge to date...

Just sat and watched all three challenges on the bounce, all really well done, and shows that it dosnt always go to plan. Love the way it's filmed and portrayed as its fairly serious, but you can see the lads also enjoying themselves and having a laugh which really sums up carp fishing! Bring on the next one.

My first ever Carp was from my local river. Remember it like yesterday as the monster fish ( probably 8lb at most) took my piece of freelined sinking bread and bolted off like a truck as soon as I struck. One of my most memorable fishing moments.

Glad you're interested in what we get up to England Giovanni but if you search out a book called 'The Compleat Angler' pub. 1653 (correct spelling) by Isaak Walton, you'll discover that - shock, horror - the English have been fishing in rivers since at least the seventeenth century and probably since you lot, The Romans invaded and built us some decent roads!

We'll mark you had a bash at river carping. You had the right idea by casting to the far side. But all the years I fished the nene, I always had a rod up stream but on my side of the river just at the edge of those cabbages. Also when you were on the bridge near the church,if you crossed and had a look down stream,you would of seen a bay on the right hand side that's where the. Carp go in the day time and feed just as it gets dark,also at first light. So don't get down hearted,give it another go at the end of August . Tight lines for now.

I'm fishing my local river which holds a small head of carp - mostly common with the odd ornamental. I've caught 2 in about 12 evening sessions which is actually not too bad as a few friends haven't caught over multiple years and it is generally a difficult venue for carp. I caught one by offering loose feed (corn) to a swim which had a couple of carp moving around on the feed and I got them competing and eventually one took the bait on ledger tactics. The second I caught by returning to a swim I had previously fished about an hour or so before which had some leftover bait laying about (maggot) and saw a fish, kept it feeding, and again placed in a ledger and caught the fish. Sometimes you can locate the carp milling around and I now pre-bait the swims where I have searched for a fish but not found any - hopefully to come back to find them like with my second carp. However, a lot of the time, the carp can be seen racing through the swim without stopping for loose bait. One took a piece of corn on the drop today as it passed through right on the inner margin below me at the same time as me throwing in some loose feed. Has anyone tackled this fishing behaviour and have any tips please? I was thinking fishing on the surface may get their attention as they pass through my swim and hopefully take the bait as they swim past like they did with my bit of corn on the drop - or even hopefully stop them in their tracks and get them feeding. They seem to stop and feed only sporadically.

Unlucky Mark,av done quite a bit of river carping to a degree of success,i personally would have gone with live baits like blown up lob worms or even zigs to imitate the bugs that are in there.Obviously there's a bigger chance of attracting the attention of the Chub but the Carp would almost certainly have passed on the boilies for the naturals.

I always see people using expensive bait or elaborate set ups (compared to mine at least) to catch carp and i don't understand why, i caught a carp around 25" (we had to eyeball it in relation to the net that was 24") using a 3/4 oz tie on sinker and a very small hook about 3/8" shank at the end of a 24-36 inch leader and a piece of uv orange yarn inside a loop of my knot, then a small pink Styrofoam ball fed onto the hook to ensure it floats above the ground, i like this setup because i never have to put new bait on i can cast all day and put the yarn fly back in the tackle box or leave it on for next time

I must off just missed you. I was stood on that exact bridge at oubdle 2,3 weeks ago i got told wasent allowed to fish that part either how come you didnt try behind the old pub where the 3 arch Oundle bridge is? Ive been asking matt Hayes the best way to fish that stretch i even had a go at fly fishing for them. But alot of boats moor up in the summer just fru them archs n have BBQS etc loads of food chucked in. I had a few chub out 1 on lure but no carp i see though witch i know sounds odd 2 togeather a huge ghostie and common swimming on top under the archs towards the bridge u wer filming on.. I know people say there bigger etc but i think this were 30-40lb biggest ive ever seen. I baited that bottom left of that small bridge u wer on and see chub and what i believe to be small carp... There was a match on the Sunday i was there on the Friday evening. Came back satarday and all the bait dog sinkers boilies cat food etc was cleared but didn't catch was only a 2 hour eve sess though always have a 6ft stalker in my boot ready lol also try near castor on castor hill that 3 arch bridge and the mill boating stretch all the boatsman tell me they see big carp near the moored boats evrey evening about tea time once again BBQ waste hope to see u there one day.. can i ask how much them "FOX BLACK N INSIDE ORANGE LINNING HOODIE ARE IN SZ XL? there nice garment mate good film unlucky if i come across any. Ill update witch parts as in around there 3,4x per week. If u do any where around Peterborough Oundle etc please let me know. thanks all the best better luck next time :)

totally wrong approach; wild carp are extremely spooky, they didnt see 20mm boilies before and dont recognise it as food, hook way to big, try a 10-12mm popup on a hook nr8 hook with fluorocarbon. Or better try a 11' feeder heavy rod with cage feeders and maggots or sweecorn as bait. Yesss you will get lots of bream and chub but this is verry good because it will create lots of commotion and carp are lure to it. Little bait in the area, let the fish compete and big carp will muscle in. Reel brake tight, dont let the fish take any line, it will run for cover in snags. Dont let your rod unattended, carp and barbel like expensive gear !!!
@MarkPitchers
@MarkPitchers 10 жыл бұрын
Hi mate.. Most of the carp swimming around in our river systems were once residents of nearby lakes/pits etc and ended up in rivers following flooding so they are very aware of what 20mm boilies are, obviously the carp I hooked and lost was anyway lol. The problem with using smaller baits is they would have been very susceptible to the attentions of bream and chub etc, in fact during just a 5hr match on this actual stretch one angler landed close to 50 bream, so smaller baits just weren't viable here. Also, lighter tackle just wouldn't have been substantial enough to steer any hooked carp away from the snags. By using heavy gear it may have cost me a bite or two, but is much better than hooking a carp only to suffer any breakages. Any way, as always, thank you for your comments and feedback :) :) Mark..
