After making some adjustments to my approach I'm back at the old estate lake in search of a stunning dark scaley carp with my trusty old original mkiv s/u. At the end of my previous trip I also caught sight of a fish that would make the perfect 'backup' target...

I have no idea why I am here, I am a lure angler from tropical Singapore fishing in saltwater mangrove creeks for Barramundi. However, the traditional ethos of estate lake carp angling with vintage tackle is up there with the best of all angling forms. Great structure and flow to the video with fantastic visuals.

Hi Chris, I just use my phone (galaxy s21) and a tripod. Audio/editing is done with the basic camera app👍👍

Hello Alex! I have just discovered your channel and love what you're doing with old school tactics. When it comes to bite indication whilst ledgering with a pin, do you have any trouble? also, do you have the clutch on or let it free spool whilst the rod is static waiting for a take? Hi Nick, all good thanks mate. The hook link is some long forgotten coated braid from the darkest recesses of my tackle box (possibly kryston - probably 15lb) hooks are either size 10 or 12 depending on the bait. The reel is actually a piece of precision engineering from Richard Carter, although the god awful noise is all my own doing. Long story short - I have some loose parts stored in the back of the spool for safe keeping. It doesn't affect the performance but makes the whole thing sound like a bag of nails!! I really should sort it out but keep getting distracted by the chance of a fish...

I'm sure that would work👍 but I'm committed to sticking with the mkiv s/u rod and unfortunately it's just too stiff to use effectively for freelining.

@@InTheEdgeWithAlex I would use it but with extra care because of it being a part of history plus I grew up in the 70s so walker I looked up to him and to have one of his rods would be amazing.

Oops 😬,..Sorry Alex , I retract the comment !! That is a good reel, as you say precision made and prob spin forever , but it does sound ropey 😂😂. I had very little joy the other time we spoke , but Sunday a 19lb Common on a side hooked DNA boilie and my 1.75 Avon Rod well pleased as way laying on with a float again. Had NO joy in getting the Avid rig drops though. I just love the content, Guys if you read my message please follow this guy he's great ... My challenge Alex is for you to catch a winter 20lber stalking !! Cheers Nick

No problem - reels aren't really designed to store random bits in!! 😆 That said this reel is based on a 'design' (I use the term very loosely - it was more of a doodle!) by Chris Yates and he wanted to incorporate a music box that played Ave Maria as you turned the handle... so a few spare parts rattling around probably isn't too bad in comparison! I must sort it out though😅 Well done on the common, I bet that gave you one hell of a fight 👏 As for the challenge I've already got a few things lined up which might be very close to what you've suggested... 🤫
