Carpathian Folk Music

The Carpathian Mountains or Carpathians are a mountain range system across Central and Eastern Europe. They are the third-longest mountain range in Europe after the Ural Mountains and Scandinavian Mountains. The Carpathians consist of a chain of mountain ranges that stretch in an arc from the Czech Republic in the northwest through Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and Ukraine, Serbia and Romania in the southeast. The highest range within the Carpathians is the Tatras, on the border of Slovakia and Poland. The second-highest range is the Southern Carpathians in Romania.
The largest range is the Tatras in Poland and Slovakia. A major part of the western and northeastern Outer Eastern Carpathians in Poland, Ukraine, and Slovakia is traditionally called the Eastern Beskids. Section of the Carpathians within borders of Ukraine is commonly known as the Ukrainian Carpathians. Classification of eastern sections of the Carpathians is particularly complex, since it was influenced by several overlapping traditions. Terms like Wooded Carpathians, Poloniny Mountains or Eastern Beskids are often used in varying scopes by authors belonging to different traditions.

I learned of this channel via the Jordan Peterson/Oliver Anthony interview. Great stuff! Another musical tradition from Eastern Europe to check out is the Bulgarian Radio and Television’s Women’s Chorus - some utterly amazing sounds have been recorded by that organization since the 1950s. On KZbin you can find a channel called “Ensemble of the Bulgarian Republic” - several songs are there.

The Carpathians are the most fascinating mountains in Europe in my opinion. Hugely underrated. So diverse and with so many virgin areas. The life of the Carpathians is so diverse and colourful, so much history and well preserved traditions! One of the last corners of Europe to remains that way.
