Something about carpenters and their tools speaks to the soul

I was an apprentice carpenter in the NYC District Council of Carpenters - 1992 - 96 I used a canvas toolbag (we commute to work on the subway & you have to carry your tools with you - so a small bag rather than a huge box makes a LOT more sense - since you have to carry it with you on the train! - that's also why once you get to a job they have a gangbox & you leave your tools on the site for as long as you're at that job) the union gave us a tool list - 16 oz hammer, tape measure, straight screwdriver, phillips screwdriver, combination square, box cutter, plumb bob & a crosscut saw - so that's what I brought I got laughed at - by the shop steward! - on my first job for bringing that saw "You planning on doing some sawing?" - the saw went home with me that night & never left my house again - the rest of the tools went in the gangbox

@@TheSawDustDude thank you! Later on in my career I got lots of tools - I spent a quarter century as a carpenter, ended up working mostly in office furniture installation, metal store front work & trade show services, so I got specialized tools that you'd need to do that kind of work - my cordless drill became my best friend & I spent a lot of time with my staple gun! - but yes, thank you and I'm glad you made this video!

I noticed that I none of your thumbnails have actually carpentry stuff in it i feel like people would click more if they seen something that is more intriguing. Like you cutting something or actively teaching just a tip. You’re channel is awesome and I appreciate all the tips man it helps out a ton.

I like the cut man terms "SHY" to cut the line and "STRONG" to leave the line when cutting because they are one sylable words.

I'm changing my career and just getting into carpentry. It's always interested me but trying to dive all in now is a little intimidating. But your videos have been so helpful. I love the stories you throw in here and there, they're funny. Thank you so much for being so open and informative😃

Night owl Nadia-- You can kiss that night owl lifestyle goodbye. You got to be on the job at 7,8 am. IF you want to be respected. I’m speaking from experience. If you are a night owl, it will fight you and you will be showing up late and have to apologize for being late. Then probably get fired after that. Get your sleep and go to bed at a reasonable time to get your 8 hours. Carpentery is a very demanding job. Your mind. You are always thinking. Measurements. And how many years will my work last? your body. Your time. Jobs never get finished on time as planned. I hope this helps you and good luck

I just got accepted as a Union commercial carpenter apprentice and am waiting for their call for a job. I bought a waffle face hammer, is that usually what is used for exterior work?

Congratulations! Waffle faced hammer, you'll find those with many frame carpenters. But really, overtime, you'll develop a preference for your tools and what works for you. Thanks for watching and please Subscribe 🍀🍺

Greeting from Ireland, I'm trying to get a carpentry apprenticeship. I've got a little onsite experience, but nothing extensive. My question to you is, will I get hired without a tool kit like this? Do employers generally require you have your own tools from day one? The only reason I'm asking is because I've moved to a new city and I'm kinda broke at the moment. I don't want to invest in tools just yet if I can avoid it... Thanks

Just be upfront with them my friend. Your eagerness to work and learn is the biggest thing at first. Plus they may have some tools that they could loan you. The big thing, show up and be on time and work like there's no tomorrow, you'll do well! Good luck as you move forward 🍀🍺
