Mr. Laws, Thank You for taking the time to make this video and include instructions on not only construction, but where and how to hang them as well. My log cabin got all sorts of tore up last year by hordes of these shiny little suckers to the point where I was actually having nightmares about them! Tonight, I've just made three of these traps based on your info and will need to make a whole lot more, then get them hung after sealing all the holes from last year after sticking a wire down each to kill the little buggers that haven't come out yet. Let's hope this year isn't as bad as last year with these little scrappers! Cheers!

I know what you mean my friend. Spray WD40 in the holes before you seal them. They will come out for sure a lot easier than wire. The work is getting set up to catch them after that it's just putting up and taking the traps. Please don't hurt your self at doing this. A few more days will not matter. Be safe on the ladder. We built a home on a mountain in East Tn. 2008, Upper porch with very high ceilings had a good sealant on the wood. We had some issues at home in Fl. and had not been to the mountain in a year. The bees and woodpeckers had made a mess of the porch. We patched what we could with liquid nails knowing nothing about carpenter bees. We got two traps at a home store and returned 4 months later thinking we could seal the wood. The traps had quite a few bees in them, they just went higher to a point we can't reach without a really tall ladder. I got as high as I could on a ladder a few weeks ago and filled holes with steel wool and glue. I don't know if there was larva in the holes yet. It was 20 degrees when we arrived and in a few days 78, The bees were out again. We got 6 more traps similar to yours at a local hardware store. Now we have carpenter ants. Thanks for the instructions on your traps. Hopefully we can keep the ants and bees from eating this house.

Very very good traps, the diagram is "exact" and your video is totally instructive. Your pole idea is brilliant. The only suggestion I will make is to use 1" cup hooks for the fixed mounting position and on the trap for hanging. The open ends of both cup hooks would make hanging a lot easier using the pole. I use this same trap on my barns and sheds. Thanks for sharing.

@@donnielaws7020 - Hi there. I know this might sound like a stupid question but do you b any chance might sell these? You see, I am disabled and I am not able to do a project of drilling and such. My wife is looking around to see if anyone sells this kind of traps. She did find someone out of Knoxville, Tennessee but uses mason jars. I am thinking that is not you because of glass jar/bottles. I have put all the traps up for the year and all ready caught a few. They will be flying around the first warm sunny day in the spring. So get them up early. You must stop up all old holes or they will return to them. They are looking for a easy hole to nest in without having to make one. They are lazy that way i have noticed, But they will make a new hole. Even in panted wood. That's why the trap makes them a easy home to go to without having to work for it.

Carpenter bees are native pollinators. Maintenance is key. If you spent the time painting and replacing rotten wood vs building these traps they wouldn’t be necessary

Donnie, thanks for showing how to make those. Those bees at our place are a nightmare. We plug up the holes with caulk and the woodpeckers pick it all back out. Our place sits really high up on the mtn side, wind back there on the deck even blew down the thermometer we had drilled up on the deck post. Any suggestions on hooks that might let me leave them up? 😊🐝

Find some deep u hooks and maybe even bend them a little. The wind won't blow them down.

Instead of caulk, use PL Loctite adhesive, or a wood hardener that turns rock hard and the birds and bees can’t peck it out or drill through it, like they do with the soft caulk.

Use a spade drill bit. Thats what I use. Im watching multiple videos today to see if I can perfect my traps I wanna build. But like I said, I use a 1/2 Spade and 1 in Spade bit

I'm all too familiar with that 'swatting' stuff...since they're not always boring holes! The absolute best thing I have used is ... a badminton racket ... very lethal/effective. Got 4 rackets at a local flea market for $5.

I've watched several vids describing these traps and how to make them, but you are the only one who supplied the science and reason for them entering the device in the first place and ending up in the bottle. I kept anticipating some sort of bait or attractant, but this was not the case with the videos I watched. I have an outbuilding that is a covered patio and a storage room. and these bees have really done a number on the exposed 2x4' rafters and associated supports. Many have damage from woodpeckers feeding on the grubs. I may need to sister new 2x4's on 3 or 4 of these supports due to them being "hollowed out" over the years. Thank you again Mr. Laws, and greetings from Louisiana! I love the Gatlinburg area and have been there 4 times and can't wait to go again! Something magical about that area....

Maybe you should use a larger Eye hook on your traps. That would make them easier to hang. Or would the wind blow them off their hangers?

Great idea, I sent this video to my daughter who lives near Chattanooga. It seems like you should put some much bigger hooks and screw eyes on them so it’s not so hard to attach with the pole. Or even two screw eyes with a wire looped between on the block
