I've always worn a tool belt, Ive been through a couple of them now. It was only recently that I tried out tool pants as an alternative way to carry my tools on the job.

Snickers workwear are the norm here in Ireland. They are expensive but worth every penny and they are the best for knee protection !

shoutout for the swedes eh ;) but yeh snickers are really good, blåkläder (or blaklader in some foreign languages) are good to. That said here in sweden the work clothes are not seen as that expensive (when compared to regular clothes, they are still expensive). Mostly because the base price of regular clothes are high so they often time don't have the same price jump I have seen in some other countries.

Nice videos mate! I work as a carpenter in scandinavia and i wear those pants for the kneepads and a carpenters vest with hanging pockets for framing, works great for me. Comes down to whatever you're used to. Thanks for your videos, I've learned a lot.

Tool belt all the time for me! Framing setup for general carpentry, ladder work, drywall and electrical. I wear my tool belt even for decking tops. Force of habit but I do remove the puller, hammer, combi square and others when doing that type of work. Another belt setup with small fastener pouch, smaller tool holder, and high mount hammer holder for lived-in, after paint and finish carpentry work. Hammer is removed for baseboard work. Both pouches can be moved to the back of the belt when kneeling. I hate pulling or pushing on tool buckets and totes so a smaller tool belt better serves me! Oh, and an apron for in-shop dust propelling work! Don't forget the ever useful, under appreciated apron!

Snickers work trousers all the way nothing comes close , had the floor layers that are good for winter and the flexiwork that are light weight and better during summer when not wearing shorts wouldn’t use anything else even though they are £80 they are worth it !!

Scott, you can get short versions of those pants. You can even get a version that keeps the knee pads and just loses the material below that.

Scottish carpenter here. I use a belt when I'm framing and "tool pants" the rest of the time. In fact the same scruffs as you're using. Like you say, easier to move around in and the knee pads are great.

I have the 7 bag framer for the rough stuff and the finishing vest for the rest both from Occidental Leather. The slim profile of the vest is great for working in an almost completed home.

Great video, especially on when to wear a belt/work pants. Ive been in construction for the last 14 years or so and it seems like a lot of guys in the trade don't understand what you mention about wearing a tool belt vs damaging finished products. It just makes you look stupid, and everyone that sees it knows you are. I worked in an occupied college where a younger guy thought he looked cool with a 7 1/4 circular saw hanging off his pouch. I found this out when I was in a later elevator and one of the professors asked me to talk with "the young guy with a saw hanging off his side and banging into everything." In situations like these I prefer to carry a tool bag with a shoulder strap. Ive never had a pair of pants like that but it looks like a great idea so I stop putting holes in my sweaters from screws/nails/whatever. Great video.

In the US, some states require it most do not, but it is considered "accepted practice," when attaching frames to a post, to notch out the post so that the frame fits sits on top of the post material so that it and the weight on the frame is supported by the post and not supported by only the fasteners. More work but far sturdier and safe.

As you said, In the UK we always wear work trousers / safety trousers. Purely as a Roofing and Carpentry Apprentice it comes in handy for knee pads and holding Claw Hammers, Nail Guns and Screws.

I started working as an Adult Apprentice Carpenter here in Auckland two years ago and I cannot recall one day where I wasn't wearing shorts and a t-shirt. In the wet or cold I do put an extra layer on top (usually a polo shirt or polarfleece) but never long pants. They are too restrictive and would get either wet or covered in mud/concrete.

I'm a recent convert to tool pants and love them.. I can't stand wearing a big belt and am lucky that most of the jobs I've had I haven't needed to wear one - at the most I have a single 3-section pouch and a separate Kuny's hammer loop on my belt (I also hate having a hammer handle whacking the side of my knee). The last ones I bought are by Herock and I got them thru Lee Valley in Canada. The best thing about them is that you can zip off the waist pouches so you can drive home at the end of the day without accidentally dumping everything you have in them into your seat. They've been super hard-wearing and also have knee pad inserts that make low-level work a joy - I also hate the way regular knee pads cut into the tendons in the back of your knee.. these stay in and I don't even notice them when I'm doing other stuff

Both FTW. The first thing I do with tool pants is cut off those external pockets. They impede access to normal pockets, try to turn inside out. They seem like they are not designed for access with normal hands and are impossible with gloves on. They also interfere with the tool belt. They are good however for the side pockets and knee pads. You can also replace individual pockets on a tool belt as they wear out and configure it for specific jobs. The range of pockets and tool holders is great with screw/nail pockets that you can use in cold weather with gloved hands.

+Varun REDDY, Nope it doesn't matter how you attach 2 block together if screw goes long enough both of them it can bare same load. And that wood block is there only to hold screw and prevents board on top for warping so basically same how you attach it.

The end board wouldl probably have a decretive end cap. So you wouldn't see the holes.

In Finland everybody uses workpants at all times and some carpenters might use toolbelt when they need to. I use workpants everyday and use the belt when i need more than 2 or 3 handtools ”at the same time”. Good video and a nice looking deck!

Mate great videos. I'm here over in Sweden working technical insulation and lite sheet metal. At first thought the builders pants were strange but after a little bit of time I don't know how to work without them. Only down side for me is if there is a little bit to much weight in them you need keep pulling them up or get suspenders

If you haven't already done so, have a look at the Engelbert Strauss workwear that your tool man uses. Been using their stuff for ten years and now use their bib and brace trousers. I think they do clip on bags for nails and tools, etc for some of their trouser range. That dicking looks fantastic by the way😉

Definitely depends on the situation, as you mentioned Scott. If you're framing; belt or vest - hands down. I have an Occidental framing rig with webbing(shoulder straps) and it holds everything. On the bench I wear a little Dewalt multi-tool holder(tape, pullers, glazing bar, 6" Combo square, marker and spring nail set) along with my Occidental three pouch with a mouse clip, for easy on off. holds a speed square, chalk line, two sizes of screw and space for a scrap of wood with dimensions or notepad. and finally a pouch for my low angle block plane. The hammer benches this one out... sorry for the novel and horrible pun. never tried the pants but I know loads of fellas who swear by them.. I prefer a pair of levi's myself. cheers pal.

I haven't worn a tool belt for years. I work in carpenters pants, as you call them. In fairness, I have a custom furniture and cabinet company. But I have mini attachments for my tools if I need to carry them around. I also wear an apron at times. I like them at most for the safety to the customers home.

To get your tip out the impact slam it down to force the bit strait back in. I stab mine into the gypcrete but anything works. I had a buddy who hit it in with a hammer. It just jars it loose.

Tool pants but i usually use "pirates pants" 3/4 pants. You really need knees pads and will not be as hot... and i very rarely use my belt. Tool belts just make you carrying around allot unnecessarily. Better have some extra metal clips in your pants to hang yor hammare, nailgun, drill etcetera

Snickers work vest is way to go. Swap the standard belt for a leather one though. I can't stand work trousers, too baggy but restrictive at the same time. You 2 look a right pair of twonks with those massive American tool belts. No offence meant. 👍

As a chippy in Auckland, I only wear boardshorts for work even in winter. Why? You get random showers throughout the seasons and you cannot beat the drying time of boardies. Or my job (as an apprentice) can change from trimming to concrete pour in a day. I like my workwear to be dry. Nothing more miserable than a wet pair of pants. So it's boardies and tool belt for me.

in Denmark (almost) nobody wear tool belts, everybody wears working pants/shorts. And the colors of the pants are useually colorcordinated for each trade so you have a good idea of the different tradesmen based on their trouser colors:)

@@leotaylor262 I am also a carpentor. Most Danish carpentors wear brown/sand colored pants. Painters wear white, and so do bricklayers. Electricians mostly wear black or blue, and so do plumbers. Yellow pants are useually garteners , roadworkers or other constructions workers. (gardeners also oten wear green shirts)

One reason for the dual-use in Edinburgh and Scotland in general; the constantly changing weather can mean a difference of several 'layers' of stuff day-to-day. On a warm day when I'm wearing 'just' my worktrousers, I'm lucky to keep my big arsed phone in one pocket without them falling down so everything else hangs off a makita parachute setup I have like yours. On a cold day when I'm plus longjohns, a extra set of trousers underneath, and with a couple of extra t-shirts tucked in and i could carry or hang half my toolbox from the trousers no problem, and the parachute belt seems excessive No doubt you spent your whole time in Edinburgh wearing about a dozen layers, its a very windy city! Walk round the wrong corner not paying attention and suddenly you're on your back looking at the sky 👀

How cold is Edinburgh in terms people who've not visited can recognise? I own 5 pairs of work trousers, 2 full sets of waterproof coveralls, a waterproof sleeping-bag-with-legs, t-shirts and jumpers pinched from the kids isle (Teflon coated,water repellent! Wheres the adult version?) of my local big box store, and a grand total of 1 pair of work shorts.... the sleeping-bag-with-legs honestly gets as much of a outing as the shorts do. Even on a sunny day here, its usually too windy to risk shorts 🙄

Plumber from Finland here. Toolpants all the way. You can fit everything you need in them and when you move around with your car all day, you don't have to remove and wear your belt again and again. There's no carpenters here that I've noticed that use toolbelts either. In summer time, we use workshorts

I'm in the UK and have always had a tool belt, but with smaller pouches. Those trousers are ok, but the pockets are just a bit too small i find, so my pouches are probably in the middle of those trouser pockets and your giant pouches. keeps the essential tools and has clips for drills :)

Hey Scott. Have not seen you for awhile. I mainly come to You Tube at the end of the day when I am winding down. Today You Tube decided to post your episode 80. I have a topic for you however. I retired in 1980. And if I had made better choices in my wives I could have actually been retired. But I didn't and so I have had to continue to work. But unlike the old days when I worked 7 days a week I now only have to work 5 hours ish per day...7 days a week. I have been doing the Handyman thing mostly, since I retired but before then I did about everything in construction. But now and then I will get a call from some local house builder who will ask me to trim for him, since he is short handed on his trim crew. I am 70 and I could still work 70 hour weeks if I had to, because the work is there. It is a well known fact of life here in America, that the younger generation kids are lazy as f.... And so going into construction is a laughable thought for them. It has gotten so bad that companies are paying these young losers to go to trade schools. Anyway, that's the way it is. My question to you is...does the same shortage of people willing to work problem exists in your little corner of the world..?

I'm not a chippie; I just work Retail. But let me say that 'workpants' are a freaking godsend for your knees. After years of kneeling on hard surfaces I never realised just how much pain I was in at the end of a shift until I tried a set of Blaklader pants (recommended by Ron Paulk). What a revelation. Since then I have also tried a cheap Chinese set under the 'DNC' brand (make your own kneepads) and have settled on Snickers workwear (have yet to try Fristad-Kansas). Again, not a chippie, but like cargo pants, the ability to load up with two phones, store keys, knives and pens, etc and also not be grinding my kneecaps into dust was life-changing in a small way. The Snickers Workwear is expensive AF but they're also hard-wearing; I'm still on my first pair after two years although I'm looking at 'upgrading' to some of their even more hard-wearing materials as the 'seat' is wearing out faster than the kneepads (if you're working on unfinished surfaces the kneepads will probably wear out first). Pardo (?), mate, get some. Your knees will thank you.

I have always used swedish snickers pants. They dont make hanging pocket of two same size pieces but outer piece is larger making pocket stay always open. And i use carpenter model with extra big pockets to fit nail strips.

Company supplies work wear, order new clothing when it's worn out, fall apart, too dirty, etc. Always in hi-viz pants with hanging pockets. Wool underwear and I'm good for down to - 30c during winter. Cut off right under the knee pads during summer, happens around 1st of may usually. For concrete work I can get what I need with me. Needs a belt and suspenders..

Hey Scott, the knee pads that you have, after awhile, turn to dog poop, flatten out and useless, 10 weeks ago I bought a pair of rubber ones, called redbacks, I would highly recommend looking into them, as I said to ya yesterday I'm doing roofing in Dublin Ireland, so spend a lot of time on my knees, the red backs mould to your knee and are amazingly comfortable. Maybe give them a try if ya keeping the builders trousers on.

I use the full rig for framing, and for other things I use a belt and a single leather pocket, it is large enough you can put hammers in it or even some nail guns. It could probably be improved with segmentations and stuff, but eventually one is back to a tool belt.

i see there are almost as many preferences as there are people in the comment section about what type of work wear to use. and not to make things too boring i'll add my own opinion in the mix as well about the topic. I prefer Helly Hansens tool pants with flex fabric which also breathes super nicely, they are absolutely great because they don't limit you working like at all. You can get in sometime pretty awkward poses and its like you would be wearing just basic sweat pants on. and what comes in that Paslodes cordless nail gun i swapped mine in Hitachis, works like a charm with out any hassel with the gas. But that's just me have a nice one fellas!

As an electrician in the UK I yse a combination of the trousers and the belt. I always have the trousers on but if I'm doing a job with that needs different types of fixings and clips or alot of tools the belt goes on

In sweden you have by law to use proper workpants on worksites, on ground or floor kneepads, you have to use shoes with toe and nail protection, t-shirts, jackets, often with a special typ of colour, like flourcent yellow or orange. gloves, eye and ear protection and ofcourse helmet. and all of this are different kind of wear for summer and winter, and some other in between isulated clothes in the spring and autuum.

I got shorts with the pouch pockets keep tape, knife, phone, coins keys, pencils and driver bits in my pockets then sling my tool belt over top. It would be hard in U.K. to get work trousers and shorts now with out flappy pockets.

Try it in Germany. We do have a lot of work pants with normal pockets over here. Shipping shouldn't be that much either...

I dont think you can even compare the 2. If your are on price or peace work you cannot be without a tool belt you wouldn’t earn a penny. But the trousers have a place mostly for knee pads. The just dont work together for me personally. Plus those trouser ruin washing machines. It doesn’t matter how well you clean them out theres alway something that ends up in the washing machine lol

Been wearing pants like those for 20 years in Canada. Used to use skillers but no longer in North America. Now I usually just sew kneepads on to pants

The germans I worked with that came over to the US with a company for a huge project swore by those work pants. I mostly only carry a few things on me so I’ve never really wore either. This video also makes me wish I worked with better carpenters lol.

I'm a chippy from the UK, living and working in France since 2011, and i am all about the work pants, but i wear a belt when framing, only problem with belts in Europe, no-one sells them with bracers (ones that will last more than a week). i can buy some from the usual online retailers, but they would cost me a weeks wages. Not going to happen.
