Well, to be real, the sexual revolution wasn't very old at that point, so she wasn't even on the conservative side for her era, especially as a Christian. In fact, she's wearing a crop top later on in concert and was clearly becoming another 'liberated' white female. I remember listening to 'close to you' flying back from Singapore to London in 1974 at the age of 13 yrs. That was the first time I had heard of the Carpenters but listened to the song again and again on the flight. I have have not stopped listening since - her voice was perfection. Timeless.
