I think Carpenters represented the fifties better than the fifties.

That's a good point. They also had some 60s left in them.

@@larryhardee1914 I'm not sure what prompted you to respond to me with that comment. But anyway, since you want to talk about the first album, ok. I like the first album a lot. There are several angles from which that album works. Some of those angles are: It has a lot of Richard in it. It has a lot of Richard lead singing. It has a youthful joy, exuberance, and naiveté. It has a lot of novelty. It has a lot of California mystique to it. It's got a 60s style creative "if it feels good, record it" whackiness to it. It's fascinating listening to future legends when they are young and green. You can ignore any shortcomings in the record, cutting it slack because it's the first, sung by a teenager and a first time producer. We hear it based on the love we have for their later incarnation. Hard to say what anyone's reaction would have been at the time. Now we're all Carpenters fans so we hear it through that lens (mixed metaphor). It's self indulgent, recording whatever they wanted rather than what would sell, which at that point in their career we can embrace. Later, after "Close to you," "Carpenters" and "A song for you," they should have been above self-indulgence and it's harder to swallow. Like most things Carpenters, I like it 100%.
