This is an incredible example of both Richard and Karen's talents before they were signed to A&M. Her voice stands out even without the incredible professional equipment she used later in her career. Sadly, I wonder if a record producer today heard this voice , along with Richard's incredible arrangements, if they would have any chance at being signed because their sound was so incredible. One thing I have always noticed about Karen's voice, along with Richard's arrangements, is that they don't screech or scream to hit higher notes, and they made it feel and look effortless. I am so glad that I grew up in a time when artificiality could not replace true talent like it can today. Don't get me wrong: the ability to adjust small notes in recording is an amazing thing, but when someone can do this naturally as Karen could, that needs to be celebrated. The many artists who came before her, leading up to her, and a few after her had that gift.Richard noted on their last recording he released with RSO that he did not tune her vocals because they didn't need tuning; they were that exact. The voice can be replicated by the sound, but not Karen's emotional depth that comes through. Thank you so much for sharing , Billy.😅

Looking into their early days, it’s obvious that they had real ambitions of a musical career. In an interview from about 1969, Karen was asked about her drums. She said she didn’t know that she could do anything like play an instrument, until she got into drums. 😊 *…We are very lucky that she found drums!* …I just love Karen! ❤ I can’t take my eyes off of her. 😀

It's just so amazing how talented, decent & percise they both were, which is rare! I was born in the late 60's, so I wasn't listening to music yet, but when growing up! I loved Disco the most, but I love most every other kind to & the older I got the more respect I have for her, there's not music so pure or meaningful anymore. I don't think anyone really can match her voice, especially bc she puts meaning behind it. I've always loved music more than anything & to sing, it's my only hobby these days!

Thank you for posting this. Big Carpenters fan. Of course, missing Karen even in September 2024 but their recordings (and Karen´s solo album) live on.

Thank you for posting this! It's really incredible. Her early voice is so beautiful. In the movie, I don't think it depicts how good her voice is before they put the mic in front of her

I would have thought Richard would have continued with this style of piano to a greater or lesser extent through his whole career. He is so good at it!
