Karen was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. She had such a pure calming voice. And she was a terrific drummer. That was her passion even more than singing. Sadly we lost her so young. Thankfully we have her legacy left in her music. The Carpenters had so many great songs such as "(They Long to Be) Close to You", "For All We Know", "Rainy Days & Mondays", "We've Only Just Begun", "Goodbye To Love", "Top Of The World", "Sing", "Yesterday Once More", "I Won't Last A Day Without You", "Please Mr. Postman", "Only Yesterday", "There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over the World)" & so many more.

The Carpenters are a brother/sister duo. I count myself among the millions of those who believe Karen Carpenter is the greatest female vocalists of the modern (1960 to the present day) era. My goodness OGO, you are about to embark on a remarkable journey. One I am positive you will really enjoy. You will learn that Karen is also a world class drummer. Richard Carpenter (the blond gentleman at the piano) was the Carpenters musical producer and arranger. Karen needed to be cajoled by Richard to sing this song. Karen hated the version she first heard but Richard assured her his treatment would be suited perfectly for her voice. When Karen arrived at the recording studio she was still unconvinced. She needn't have worried. Richards melancholy arrangement was the perfect setting for Karen's voice. Karen responded by needing only one live take to record one of music history's most poignant vocal performances. Truly amazing. The 'flute' is actually an Oboe followed by French horns. May I suggest We've Only Just Begun or Rainy Days And Mondays as possibly your next reaction. I can't wait to watch your reactions to The Carpenters. Take care my friend, RNB

Every time I listen to this I want to cry. Karen had so much talent and left us so so very much too early. A shame.

The instruments were enjoyable because Richard was a brilliant arranger. Also, the backup vocals were just Richard and Karen overdubbed.

I can see you reacting to Karen perfectly. You’re on the edge of crying and that is OK. We all were there and are always there. So many of her songs bring you right to the edge and some over it (Goodby To Love). Oh that deep horn was an Oboe. I didn’t know it before, just knew it hit hard. Enjoy joining us down in the rabbit hole. I date back to the beginnings. Try the song I mentioned above and, Rainy Days and Mondays, Close To You, We’ve Only Just Begun and to not cry; Please Mr. Postman and Top of the World. Enjoy!

Don’t you remember, you told me you loved me baby? You said you’d be coming back this way again baby… The Carpenter’s “Superstar” is a unique concept-the original title was “The Groupie Song”. “Superstar” is about a girl who is infatuated with a rockstar. She saw him at a show, they had a fling, and he told her he loved her. She hears him and his music all the time in her head…oh, no, this time it’s just him on the radio. "Superstar” works on a more basic level because people don’t listen to the words of the song, just the feel of the song. We hear the chorus: “don’t you remember you told me you love me you love me baby” and remember that we have had similar feelings of heartbreak. Is this is just a dedication of love? Nope. In this particular case, the relationship was not that deep to begin with ( the girl might have been led on), but when Karen Carpenter starts singing the chorus, we all feel sentimental. Perhaps the lesson is that regardless of whether the relationship is serious or not, unrequited love hurts. This is Karen Carpenter at her finest. Songwriters: Leon Russell / Bonnie Bramlett / Delaney Bramlett

This song was covered by Luther Luther Vandross. You should check out his version too.

probably the best known version after the Carpenters. Vandross was a HUGE fan of Karen Carpenter and his version was a homage to her and he himself stated that no one's version touched her and her brother's.
