Her name is Karen Carpenter. Her brother is on the keyboard. She hated being the front person of the group. She wanted to only play the drums. She didn't think that she could sing. Her voice is so soothing. There was no auto tune back then either, This was how she really sounded.

HER VOICE then and now is regarded by music critics and historians as one of if not THEE greatest female voice of love and romance songs ever.. she and her brother, richard, were actually the top u.s. hitmakers of the 1970's with more than 12 top ten pop classics and many more that reached the top 40.. she was a world class drummer and her brother, who arranged their songs, was a world class pianist..they also did ALL the harmony and background vocals... she also had little to next to nothing vocal training! a once in two lifetime voice and GOD given....

The song was written by Bonnie Bramlett and the late, great Leon Russell (who also wrote the Carpenters songs "This Masquerade" and "A Song for You") and was released by Delaney & Bonnie as Groupie (Superstar) in 1969 with Eric Clapton on guitar and Leon Russell on keyboard. It was originally planned to be called "Groupie (Superstar)" since the lyrics are about a rock superstar who had a one night stand with a groupie. To the superstar, it was just a fling but seen through the eyes of the groupie, she fell in love with the superstar and believed him when he said he'd be back again. It has been covered by a number of singers, including Luther Vandross, but none of the versions did as well on the charts as the Carpenters version. It was covered at least 3 times before Richard Carpenter heard Bette Midler do it on the Tonight Show & thought it'd be a good for them. He changed the title (**see edit/correction below) & some lyrics, to better fit the Carpenters clean cut image. Below is a link to the original, released as a single in 1969 by Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, with Bonnie (Bramlett), lead vocals, Rita Coolidge, back-up vocals, Eric Clapton, guitar & Leon Russell, piano. When D&B released their 1972 album, they used the original 1969 recording on it, which is why some sites mistakenly list theirs as 1972, instead of as the 1969 original. The vocal you hear here is not just a first take. It's the first time Karen ever sang the song. She was one of a kind. And yes, this song was a hit single for Carpenters, their fourth or fifth one. They were a hit machine in the first half of the 70s. Know what a power ballad is? No one did until Richard invented the genre with another Carpenters hit, "Goodbye To Love" in 1972. Check that one out... "Superstar", written by Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett, is a song about a "groupie" who is infatuated with the frontman of a band. Richard heard it in a TV performance by a young Bette Midler and arranged for Karen to sing it. (She took to it instantly; as I noted, the vocal you just heard, which was the single release, was the first time she ever sang it...)
