This compilation shows its actually a difficult scene to get right. So many seem ludicrous or cartoonish, and then motivations of the characters seem to get washed away in the tableau of the scene. I really like the 85 version and 2017 version, they seem to get the tone just right. Although, it well never not amuse me that in 2017 version after he gets hit with the slate Gilbert looks as if he is ready to propose to Anne on the spot.

Safyra N I disagree, but that’s your opinion and you’re entitled to believe so. I personally think that the 1987 one is far closer to the books, which I grew up reading, and the 2017 one feels like a completely different thing with all the changes they’ve made to the backstories and the characters. I think that the 2017 one is fine, but would’ve probably enjoyed it far more if it were a different adaptation, and not based upon the books. But that’s just MY opinion.

I feel that Anne with a E did the best job depicting that scene, it felt the most honest, like something like that would actually happen, while nowadays those older type scenes always look more forced to me, like they were reading that they had to it. It actually felt like she just grabbed it and swung without thinking, the others grabbed it after their lines and broke it directly over his head. I always loved the story though, I think all versions are great even the cartoon and play ones that I haven't seen, or the video diary...?

@@waisonline Anne in the books is described as quite plain looking compared to other girls her age but still pretty. Amybeth potrays Anne very nicely. Also, Gilbert is not just attracted to Anne's looks. She has lots of other qualities that make her likeable. You can see how the relationship of Anne and Gilbert is developed as the show progresses.

@@waisonline - Well, to each their own. I love this series though. Also, Anne is not psychotic. It is pretty natural for her to freak out since she knows people don't like her. Remember the picnic scene, anyone would feel insecure after that. Billy also treated her disrespectfully so she didn't expect Gilbert to be a gentleman and after ignoring him so many times she lost control. You can see that she was the one who approached Gilbert after his father's death.
