I had the pleasure of meeting Jasper at an event in 2019. A lovely guy and we chatted for 5 minutes or so. I referred him to this clip and asked if he could remember what Spike was up to off camera that made Jasper laugh - he couldn't remember, the reason being that as soon as Spike arrived in the studio he was 'on it'. Never letting up with his anarchic genius until he left. Jasper said it was incredible. There's nothing like Spike and never will be...

A one-off anarchic genius. They broke the mould when they made him. He will never be forgotten and always sorely missed.

watching this again - calls herself prunella plunger-bailey. this is a reference to his first collection of war memoirs - "Milligan recounts in his memoirs how, in his Bexhill-on-Sea army barracks, Gunner "Plunger" Bailey did a twenty-minute act by manipulating his genitals into "Sausage on a Plate," "The Last Turkey in the Shop" and, with the aid of a pair of spectacles, "Groucho Marx."

One we didn't get, tho I expected it, was Private Parts. If you, like me, are an avid Goon fan, you will recognise themes and characters that Milligan used over and over again, only in different contexts. Understandable, it must have been very difficult to convey a certain type of humour in a fresh manner with fresh characters every time.

What was he doing off camera? The mind boggles...

Such a special human being, multi talented, acting, writing or standing up for trees everything he touched turned to gold, what shame his like was blighted with depression. He makes rather an attractive woman too lol. If you haven't read his brilliant first novel "Puckoon" I recommend it

"A sort of Claire Rayner...with bigger ones!" "Private Massage - oh!. Of the Queens. OH!" "oh, no no, he must leave the regimental goat alone. And sell his gumboots." There's no one else quite like Spike Milligan. Clostest to his humour was I think Kenny Everett. Both had the ability to reduce the studio and camera operators into helpless laughter.

Not funny anymore. This is the modern army.

Um…this is awkward. If you’re trying to occupy some sort of politically correct high ground here, it is worth addressing the irony that you’re defending the nations hired killers. The forces with which this country has enforced murderous colonial regimes. Modern AF eh
@huntergray3985 Жыл бұрын
@@Tomsharpe9988 I think that you totally misunderstood why I said it is not funny anymore. It's not funny because the armed forces are now like this: This is the modern army and that is not funny.

@@zappasmoustache23 And the forces who defeated the Nazis and Fascists? The forces that enforced the end of slavery around the world? The forces that have stood against tyranny and terror for hundreds of years? Perhaps you should consider: "When the country is in danger, the military’s mission is to wreak destruction upon the enemy. It’s a harsh and bloody business, but that’s what the military’s for. As George Orwell pointed out, people sleep peacefully in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."(Richard Grenier, April 1993.) Sleep tight my little one! From one of the rough men that have guaranteed your safety.

@@huntergray3985 the forces who massacred thousands of Indians at Churchill’s orders, who sparked the mau mau uprising in the 50s after treating those people like animals and terrorists in their own country. Occupying Ireland and basically raping that whole country for 500 years. Nobody is coming after us, nobody gives a shit about a petty little island. The military absolutely did not enforce the end of slavery around the world, and have incited and enacted more tyranny and terror than anyone has ever exposed us as a country to. Those are rich man’s wars and you are a pawn and as soon as they’ve used you up they will spit you out. I’m sorry you don’t see the irony of your previous comment but then if you did, you probably wouldn’t be very good at following orders. And that would be no good for the army.
