Only found your channel when KZbin showed me one of your videos. I like your style, there’s an element of Colin Furze to your presenting. Keep up the good work.

Great to see this rare Marina being brought back to life, well done for saving it. In the 80s I had a Special coupe in astral blue and where the paint was original it was quite thin suggesting there wasn't any lacquer coat or as you suspect it was mixed in with the colour coat. Enjoying the videos and your skills and looking forward to seeing this project progress.

Hello Just came across your channel and subscribed, British leyland and the 70s hold happy memories of my family members as a few of them worked at the Cowley plant and I lived not far from there in Thame , now in Bicester with my own classic cars to fiddle around with , I’m looking forward to seeing this take shape over the next weeks ahead

Most of the stories were told around Christmas time , drinking my dads home brew and a fog filled living room from the odd embassy No1 being smoked , we used to merge with the long bridge plant as my mum’s cousin worked there, but now I’m 53 and the British leyland gang are all up in heaven now , no doubt on strike 😂

It’s a shame there was a bit more rust than you first thought. The repairs you’ve done look really great though. Can’t wait for more updates!

I've always had a pang for a 1.8tc Marina Coupe in Black Tulip, keep up the good work and keep away from posh tw*ts with pianos.

Thanks! Yes I'm Smashing stereotypes and Breaking Pianos here instead. But don't worry, I've got my guard up! Got a 1.8TC Coupe in Blaze and a 1.3 black tulip coupe needing my attention. I'll drag one or other out for a video at some point.

I've suffered in single garages, driveways and fields. I thought the double garage would give me more room, but I still trip over myself most of the time! Don't think I could do a part ex on corsa tho...

@ClaytonSpeed I'd love more space, I don't take it for granted, because I always wanted a garage and before this it was engine swaps in the back lanes 😆 and I think you could, no part ex mate I wouldn't expect any money from you 😆

@@claytonspeedcars I must have owned at least 7 Marinas in my time, my girlfriend had the orangy coloured one in the two door fast back version, compared to my MK2 Escort Ghia, it handled like a barge until you got used to it, i got the telescopic front shock upgrade which kept the original lever arm shocks as well and when I sat on the front wing the shocks barely compressed any at all,and Ifitted rear van springs as well and it helped a lot, but never as good as the Escort. I also fitted 185 sized tyres 🛞 as well, couldn’t tell if it helped any but it sure looked good. 😎👍👍👍🇬🇧

All the usual upgrades then! They can be made to handle, my turbo marina acts like it is on rails if I push it into a bend. Torsion bars for the win!

Excellent video Geoff, instuctive without being OTT and silly, what MIG welder do you use and recommend and do you use gasless or Argon mix?, just asking as I am a bit of novice but I have to weld new sills on my car, cheers
@claytonspeedcars
@claytonspeedcars Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. My welder is a Snap On Pro Mig 170S - it is about 30ish years old but still very capable. I use BOC Argon Shield Light. Perfect for welding under 4mm steel and 0.6mm wire. If you are new to welding remember these three things: 1. Welding is only 10% of the job. Prep is obviously the route to any good finish. 2. Clean, clean, clean - you need to make sure there are no contaminants around the area you are welding. Clean off under seal and anything that might get into your workspace, back and front of it if you can. Use a strip disc to clean off old paint and primer and cut out all the rot. If the metal looks pitted then chances are it could have gone through to the other side and you will be blowing holes very quickly. 3. Take your time. Test your welder settings on a piece of steel the same thickness and age if possible to make sure you have everything set right. Hope that helps! Let me know if I can be of further help.

Thanks for your reply, I am not new to welding but a novice at MIG your advice is very helpful, i guess the old adage of practice makes perfect comes to mind! cheers

I'm reasonably certain that cars of this era were painted in cellulose, no lacquer just straight colour. Great video though, keep up the good work!

@claytonspeedcars Жыл бұрын
Interesting. I do know that they did suffer with lacquer peel in the mid 70s sparking some warranty claims and repaints. I'll do some more digging.
@simonadshead857

My dad set up his own bodyshop in the mid 70's and everything was pretty much cellulose based, paint, primer, stopper as well. There wasn't any 2 pack or clear over base. There was what was termed 'knacker lacquer' which was enamel paint.

@@claytonspeedcars: His is a bit of a dying art. Tack weld and filler seems to be the standard these days. That said, he has the time and patience. Watch the one where he takes a rusty, battered, and split rear fender and makes it like new. Amazing!
@claytonspeedcars
@claytonspeedcars Жыл бұрын
@@johnpowell5433 I've never been one to tack weld and fill. I've been taught by old skool fabricators, guys who would make custom body kits for show cars completely from metal! They weighed a metric ton but looked the part and never ever split or cracked filler. This guy speaks my language!
