Never use carsales for car info. That was the worst review I have ever seen. It's the cheapest EV in Australia, reviewed like they were buying a luxury brand. Ridiculous. And it's alloy wheels with Aero Covers, like the Teslas.

In terms of the driving? I noticed UK journalists were particularly positive in that regard, unlike here.

@@jay-uo2bi Even the hard-to-please John Cadogan liked the driving dynamics of the MG4, and just about all the other Australian reviewers have liked the handling of the MG4. Guess we can probably chalk this one down to personal preference - she might like the less sporty, more comfy cars better. Good to have this viewpoint for those who have womenfolk who also might not drive it as aggressively and find that the suspension is not tuned to their liking. One thing she didn't mention though is that the "small" battery pack used to be considered "fairly large" a few years ago and the same size as early Tesla model 3 SRs but cost $20k less. It also happens to be LFP which you can charge regularly to 100% and it should last longer than the batteries on more expensive EVs, as well as being much safer. (Not that there are that many EV fires - still way more fires with ICE vehicles - but there is not a single proven case of LFP batteries catching fire to date.)

I thought this review was a bit overly critical for a car at this price point. I bought the 64 and love how it drives, it’s definitely responsive enough while remaining comfortable and fun to drive. I found the suspension firm enough, not exactly “floating” in my opinion. I guess it’s a matter of personal taste.

Strange review. For $39k you're not going to get any kind of hot hatch, EV or ICE. But 125kW of power from a standing start delivered to RWD, this thing jumps off the line, and it hits 100km/hr easily under 8 seconds, which is pretty decent. Obviously highway driving range drops to around 300km, but you didn't mention that in city stop-start driving people have achieved close to 400km range. And while this is a city EV it's still manageable for road trips if you can get to charging points, as DC charging speed is pretty decent too. I also read the maximum charge speed is 117kW not 80kW?

its around 88kW. 117 was the UK model before they 'fixed' it as it never achieved that speed.

Many ice engines need a turbo to get 125 kW of power and those are usually top of the range while this mg 4 Is a base model.

The Excite surely isn't a slouch. For starters it has longer range over a pre-facelift ZS EV. More importantly for this price tag, the Excite 51 has the same rear multi-link rear suspension as... Essence Long Range 77 or the upcoming X-Power compared to BYD Dolphin.

On reviews of other cars there is generally an attempt to provide comparative information between the levels. Often a large part of the review is just that. This review was conducted by and large as if there was only one variant and that's your lot. The car tested has different battery tech and a much slower charging level compared with the two larger batteries in the model above it - it would have been great to have heard about that piece of information - the two models above actually charge at much higher levels and are significantly faster off the line - I've driven one, we didn't hear that fact at all. I found the car I drove was relatively composed over speed humps and uneven roads, it was a standout in my experience, granted it was not the base model but. I'd call this a very lazy piece of motoring journalism with perhaps just an edge of agenda.

I tend to agree. I test drove the 51 with the greatest expectation of being absolutely disappointed. my other vehicle is a VW Polo gti and I only ever drive in sport mode. I bought the 64 because I was really impressed by the acceleration, handling, internal and external styling, comfort, turning circle and price point.

Lady, you actually have a MG4 refresh (2023) with the rear wiper and middle headrest.. we'd love to hear about improvements over the original - settings memory, LKA improvements and TJA, ACC too

I just took the long range for a test drive, and it was a blast to drive. This review is rubbish. Also if the base model is too slow get the long range. 0-100 in 6.5 seconds is faster then most petrol cars.

Thanks to big instant torque off electric motors, you'll really hardly notice the difference. The Excite 51 shouldn't be a slouch or otherwise the Essence 64 is the sweet spot of choice.

From all the other reviews it is an excellent car. I have an MG ZS EV Mk1 and the build quality is very good. The MG4 is the car I wanted to buy as I really did not want to get into an SUV but the MG4 was not about. My main concern with the base model is lack of 360 degree cameras for parking. As for power, it is faster than the Mk1 which can effortlessly leave all but the most powerful petrol and diesel vehicles in the dust in city driving. Sometimes petrol or diesel cars will pull up on the left at intersections and I have to go slowly to let them get ahead because they assume they can draw ahead if they accelerate hard. I can imagine some of the more established brands have a better feel to them in terms of cabin layout and instrumentation, but they are petrol or diesel or else very expensive. This is the problem for electric vehicles, most purchasers will buy based on the feel of the car without any thought to what drives it or the environment.

The Excite 51 should hardly a disappointment or otherwise I'd say go for Essence 64. I too want the MG4 as I too don't want SUV.

This 'no spare tyre' caper has to stop. We went through this at work and it was a total disaster. Other than that, the car seems pretty good, especially since they've dropped the price to around $33K. I have even heard of them on sale at under 30 grand.

I tried to sit thru this review but I couldn't. I think it's overly critical. I don't expect a raving review on MG 4 but I have gone to enough MG4 reviews to know there are a lot of raving reviews about MG4 in UK and Australia. Sure there will be negatives and I would like to know them as I might consider this car but this review is not helpful. Seems biased from the start.....
