Manual car driver here - great explanation. I'd add that usually we don't watch revs on the tachometer (which in this case is a combined display for revs/speed), but listen to the engine to decide when to shift gear. Also, when parking on a hill, the smart drivers move the shifter in first gear with the nose of the car pointing up, and in rear with the nose pointing down to make maximum use of the resistance of the drive train.
@FawryFx2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but that's for experienced manual car driver. Beginners need to start somewhere and have a reference to get to know the car.
@largol33t12 жыл бұрын
In my case, I can feel the engine and just time it in my head. The tip about reverse, it varies from one brand to another, just ask your dealer. They will know. However with Volkswagen and Audi, you usually push DOWN on the shifter so the lockout bump slides under the boot and into R. Been driving MINIs and VWs for 14 years with manuals and will never give them up.

As a European dude I can say 90% of us drive manuals here, in almost every country in the continent. I live in a small EU country called malta which has the steering wheel on the right side like the UK. I'm trying to Imagine driving automatic on the left side your entire life and then trying to drive stick while driving in what we consider the passenger seat haha. I found it confusing when I drove on the left side in iceland, kept touching my arm on the door to switch gears for the first 30 mins. we learn on manuals as the norm, and fun fact if you learn on an automatic car your license won't be valid to drive manuals. I'm smiling and finding the comments wholesome with americans coming here to calm down from the panic and learn the basics :) You got this guys

I'm a single mom stuck learning manual by myself as I inherited a car after my old one was impounded. Its been a challenge (and embarassing) doing this by myself but I'm strangely proud of myself. I had so many people try to convince me to trade it for an automatic but I know nothing major is wrong with this almost 20 year old car and I'm too afraid to trade it for an unknown car that might be on the brink of major repairs. If it's in working condition, I might as well figure this out. But it definitely hasn't been easy doing it by myself. 😅 I think I've been accelerating too much through changing the gears.

I know I’m pretty late, hopefully you got the hang of it now. Anyway you aren’t supposed to add ANY throttle when up shifting. When you up shift you need to take your right foot completely off the gas, push the clutch all the way in, up shift, and then take the clutch out. When up shifting there’s no fancy clutch work, just push in, then let it out.

@whitesox26245 жыл бұрын
@@everydaylife6528 when you "burn the clutch" it just means you're riding the clutch (or wearing it out) when you're not suppose to. For an example, when I first started when i would push the clutch in and i would hold it while driving as another form for braking. That's not correct especially when turning I would panic and keep my foot on the clutch half way in. When driving a manual car, you push it in to change gears but you're not suppose to hold it all the way in or half way when you're done shifting. You'll be fine and eventually you'll get the hang of it. You'll know you burned the clutch when you smell something funky. That just means to give the car a break. It also takes a long time to wear it out, so dont think you'll burn it right off the bat(can cost a couple hundred or thousand dollar to fix tho.)

For starting on a hill you can also stay on the break, release the clutch until you hit the biting point, let go off the brake (since at the biting point you can't move backwards in first gear [there's actually a mechanism behind that]) step on the gas and kindly release the clutch completely. That's how it's taught in Germany, we don't use the handbrake anymore because it's getting replaced with the electric one.
@dandandan015 жыл бұрын
If you have the biting point you definitely can move back in certain cars, especially the one I'm learning in. You have to make sure it's a deep bite to move forward (clutch up slightly more)

Best thing for people to at least know, whether they are good or not at it. My job requires that you know how to drive a stick shift vehicle before they let you become a driver, even though 80% of the fleet is Automatic anyways. They can't risk you getting a stick truck and not knowing what to do! My first car was a stick ('88 Hyundai Excel) and I did suck at first going around the Winn Dixie parking lot at night but I got better and slowly go out on the streets and finally became a pro at it. Highly recommended skill here, you just never know!

My job doesn't require it but it's a necessity when you don't know if you're picking up a manual or automatic car from a dealer. I was mostly self taught on turbocharged cars which can be a bit difficult with all that power. It started from learning how to park & stop then getting on the street. Recently, I gotten on the freeway for the first time in a manual & it was scary because I didn't know how to downshift but i pulled it off. It's a really good skill to learn so that you don't seem useless in certain situations.
