Bought a few from a local guy. Pulled out coin I knew was 66 or better. It was a wow moment. You know when you see it after looking at hundreds of 63 and 64's

The 1881 CC MS 66 GSA is such a sweet coin. The 1885-CC should have been awarded an MS 65.

Those are some nice Carson City Morgans, I have 1880 through 1885 in GSAholders ungraded,I got a really good deal on them!!probably my best coin buys yet.

Hi Ben, I'm glad that you have post a video off GAS CC cause never in my wildest dreams I thought I would never own a GSA CC with the original box and COA I have 8 of them 2 are 1881-CC and 1885-CC each I pay $600 and rest of them are 1882-CC to 1884-CC I only pay $300 each i was lucky to come across with this old man his plan was to pass it to his kids or grandkids none of them show no interested I have been buying Morgan's from him cherry pick he was collected Morgan's in his younger years I got more to say don't want to make that long I'm lucky

Hi Ben - I have seen many of those fine parallel scratches on Morgan’s. I’ve heard them called strip scratches and they occurred during minting process when imperfections were in the lubricant in the strips of silver as the planchets were punched out.

I have often wondered what those were as well. I assumed they were part of the minting process because the grading companies tend to ignore them when determining grade. Thanks for the information.

Seems in Morgan grading that the detail in the hair above the ear is what seperates MS-64s from MS-65 and up, past clean fields and coin marks.

roller marks

The lines across the face and cheek of liberty are actually roller marks, made on the surface when the silver is being thinned out by the rolling machine making it the right thickness. Pressure and imperfections on the roller causes the lines on the planchet which continues into the striking process

On the 1884, those marks are “extrusion” marks on the planchette, usually found on coin planchettes stamped from the very beginning or very end of the raw planchette strip.

I trust Ben will resubmit the 1881-CC in order that NGC will assign it a correct grade one point lower than Mint State-66. The 1885-CC really is a high-end 63, and I don’t understand why he was hoping for a grade of Mint State-65. Yes, John is correct - the parallel lines across Ms. Liberty’s face on the 1884-CC are roller marks that resulted from the metal strip being rolled out to the proper thickness before the planchets are punched out. In my opinion, they do detract from the eye appeal of a coin, however they are not really scratches. It was the M in unum mark that stopped them from getting 65. Personally I think the 85 is close. Sometimes one specific mark just takes a coin out of contention for the gem grades.

I noticed all of yours were holdered in "uncirculated" . some holders do not have that marked. What's the significance?

you are shorting yourself on values of your coins , a grade of 64 book value is more like 600 to 1500 dollars and up - on all cc coins unless of course error coins and such
