Carson City Public Works Street Technicians: Shannon Harjes, Steve Salazar, Eric Engels and Operations Manager Rick Cooley were dispatched to Fremont Elementary School for a duck rescue operation. Upon arrival school staff reported rescuing eight ducklings however one was still in the storm drain. With a little creativity and the help of school staff, crews were able to locate the duckling and reunite it with its family. This was a successful operation thanks to school staff, who responded initially and made every attempt to save the ducklings. Often there are warning signs when ducklings fall down the storm drains. Typically, observers will see the mother duck frantically circling a storm drain or hear ducklings in the drain. If you come across a duck in distress near a storm drain, please check the drain for cheeping sounds. If you hear ducklings, please call the Nevada Humane Society in Carson City at (775) 887-2171 or Carson City Public Works at (775) 887-2355. Public Works crews may have to remove the drain inlet to get to the ducklings so calling Public Works - works every time!
