On May 20, 2007, Jazz Aviation flight 8911, operated by a Bombardier CRJ-100 registered C-FRIL, which originated in Moncton, had an extremely hard landing at Toronto-Pearson International Airport, because the captain was taking picture during this critical phase. There were no injuries. The aircraft was written off. Subscribe, like, share and comment for more videos!

I’m not a pilot, but I cannot believe they both failed to realize the rear gear had collapsed. Even without the auditory and tactile indications, the nose of the airplane would pitch up and they would be looking at the sky rather than the runway.

In reference to the comments below, there is a difference between the noun disaster and the adjective disastrous and the video maker is quite correct to describe the landing as disastrous as it put the lives of all aboard at risk and led to the total loss of the aircraft. To describe the whole event as a disaster would not be correct as no lives were lost. Near disaster might be possible.

I experienced a rough landing flying into KFLL: Runway 10L, Winds 90º almost straight down the runway, 15 KTS gusting to 35 KTS(!) Airspeed ±20 KTIAS. Flare and stall??? A real crapshoot. Come in hot for the gusts, if the gusts stop, the aircraft stalls about 15 feet above the runway. The tower doesn't have a runway jack. We hit the runway like a brick. My teeth snapped shut and all of the 'geese' let out a huge groan. I was surprised that the main gear held out. I waited for all of the pax to leave the plane and then I walked to the front and requested permission to approach the flight deck. I stuck my head in and said "I don't know what they're all bitching about... 'ya caught the first wire. The Captain burst out laughing and the First Officer (newly hired from the U.S. Navy) just hung his head. A memorable flight for me.

Wait a minute! They are landing 06 and the wind is at 140. That is a right crosswind, not left. The captain should have been doing his job, however, the F.O. should have easily been able to land the aircraft by himself or he shouldn't be there. He had 4000 bloody hours. What if the Captain was incapacitated? In my opinion, there is no way he should have kept the autopilot on that late in the approach. He should have had things stabilized way back at the outer marker after the gear went down. Just crab into wind to maintain the localizer/centerline, then left rudder, to straighten it out just before landing. Right aileron after touchdown to keep the aircraft from flipping over from the wind. Students learn that before they are allowed to go solo. Pilots let computers fly the aircraft nowadays. I guess the Captain would want to photograph this crash too and add it to his collection...........after he is out of work ( I hope). "What is that scraping noise? Hmmm. Beats me."

Should a Co-Pilot not be competent enough to land the aircraft on his own? After all, that is one of the reasons for a second pilot, as a backup if the Captain becomes incapacitated. The second pilot, it’s not particularly a backup of the captain becomes incapacitated. He is the senior pilot, both pilots, fly sectors, and the other pilot, not flying, manages, radios, manipulate suit and controls and other stuff, so either pilot is able to operate on their own in an emergency.
