Interesting to see people using the old TQ carb. I worked at Carter till 1980 and was the first assembly line inspector on the TQ. I always thought it was an interesting and very simple design...Funny story, a local parts shop called Carter and asked how much the TQ sold for, as he was offered several for sale. This was before any had even shipped to chrysler, and the "for sale" units had been lowered from the 3rd story assembly line and spirited away by thieves...

I just rebuilt the one on my '80's Gran Fury 318 and now it runs better than it ever has. Just hit the key, hot or cold start fires right off. I've always used the 2 screwdriver method too, but I did have that tool somewhere. You have to be really careful though, if you just loosen the jam nut that spring unwinds so fast it'll land in the bowl and you gotta take the top off. I need to adjust mine. It's too tight. Some of those emission era carbs were set at 2 1/2 turns or higher. I had a '79 300 and I think that one ran good at 2 turns. The one on my Fury has the 'tamper proof' choke pull-off box so it's a real late one. I've found the biggest thing with these carbs is the 'X' rings that seal the body to the wells deteriorate, sometimes the epoxied wells crack or get loose and they're really sensitive to the float level. I used to have a ton of these carbs. 10 years ago you could buy these all day long for a song. I bought some NOS ones for under $100. A great carb.

So I adjusted my air door exactly like you said, exactly how you did. It’s a 318 bored .030 over with a 340 six pack cam and 340 heads. You said if you have cams in them add another 1/4-1/2 turn, which would make it 2 turns in my case. It still stumbles when you go to open the throttle. My choke pull off passes the test. What else could it be? It fires right up and idles good. Just stumbles when you go to open the 4 barrels.

Try taking tension off the air door spring buy turning the plug .25 clock wise at time to find the sweet spot. Air door droop may be to low also...it should be @ 0.040 down from the stop. If the engine "chuges" door is too tight. If the engine "lies down" then takes off...door is too loose.

The accel pump nozzles may be to big/small as well. Accel pump may be set to low to cover the transition period. Rod tree may be set wrong. Did you bush the primary throttle shaft bores?

My thermoquad as fitted to '83 dodge truck is losing fuel in bowl after several days sitting - would love to know/see how to tackle how and where this is draining ie known drain leaks-thanks
@carterthermoquadclubmanley1863 Жыл бұрын
Draining can be a cracked bowl, x-rings needs replacing, or the fuel bowl wells are leaking. The bowl needs to be inspected very closely

how do you properly adjust the set screw for the metering rods ? I also follow your thermoquad group on facebook

Loose rule of thumb...throttle wide open and tree top is a few thou below the retainer. Correct way...push down on tree, turn screw counter clockwise til you feel zero drop... Turn screw clockwise and the moment you feel the tree lift, turn screw 1.5 turns more.

The devil is in the details...ensure the passages in the lid are clear...thecsecondary sir door may be set too soft. Ensure the accel pump squirts with the slightest throttle movement

Uh....that's 3/4 turn, not 1-1/2, you're counting a half turn, as a full turn
