I had a S600 of this generation from near new as well. In the 6yrs I had it the only expensive item that went was the ABC pump and covered by warranty. Cosmetically it was perfect…the older W220s, as MegaSpec is did tend to suffer more with issues. My father bought an S500 when it came out and after 4yrs had issues even the dealer weren’t sure they could fix (problem with battery draining)

I did something similar, i bought a cheap pickuptruck with lots of problems, the repair shop wanted some 5k for all the stuff, and i said nah and bought used parts and relatively cheap new parts, for example i paid 200Euros instead of 800 Euros for 2 Front wheelbearing-assemblys, because original parts are mental expensive. That didnt include labourcost, but i spent a lot on specialtools hahaha, i would say i spent around 700Euros now instead of around 5k, because labourcost and original parts are mental, if you cut those two out you will save yourself a lot. But you need Time and good research.

But that wouldn't be it in perfect working condition. Far from it. Add the grand this POS cost and you're talking about £12K, which is more than enough to get a better, more modern car in good condition. A cursory check of Autotrader gives loads of much newer S-Class options (including S500s) at that price range. However, what I would add is that you could do a lot of this much cheaper by getting used parts rather than new.

Considering that the car was probably around 120k when it was new, I’d repair it for 3-4k. The problem these days is, that if a repair costs more than the car itself, people get rid of it without thinking about the value. I drive an E36 and I don’t know how much I spent on it over the years. I know that it’s well over 4K easily and it’s just a 318i. But the car will be more worth if taken care of since it’s becoming a classic. And i net that the S500 will become such a classic too eventually. I don’t think that you get a decent car (in the realms of an S Class) for the money you are spending. If you spend the money on the repair, you know it’s new and repaired and that you do not have to worry about it. That’s my opinion 🤷🏻‍♂️

@Yalondi Supherfon I agree, I've done alot of body work and I know that all you need there is 2 door skins from a scrap yard and fit and spray, arches will be a bit more tricky but still not difficult really. People don't realise that when you have any skill at all repairs on cars are cheap as chips, I could fix that rust and respray that whole car for about £600. Maybe less

What would be a good follow up would be a vid of you buying all the parts second hand from ebay, fitting what you can yourself and getting the mechanic to do the rest...and then seeing how much you save. A lot of us are thinking why buy brand new parts when second hand parts are well over 50% less.

@G. V. Q just have to make time, most have the ability. The options on this car alone make the at home repair effort somewhat worth the fix of the suspension and change of diff. gasket and fluids. Some descent tires. The rust is just a loss. Car will run descent for years!! At a very low cost. It has a fridge for f*ck sake adjustable rear seats lol! Folk spend hundreds of thousands to have a car with those conveniences.
