I'm sorta in-between. I like early 2000's cars. Easy to work on, reliable, efficient, and modern but not too modern. No complications like direct injection but also no fiddly carburetor or complex mechanical injection. Diagnoses most issues on its own with OBDII, parts are readily available and not expensive or difficult to find.

Agreed, theres to much nostalgia about the 80s and earlier that the era between 1995 and 2005 to 2010 is largely forgotten and often put in the same bag as the post 2010 cars. I mean, the 80s are so hyped now, let's show some love to the era of the new millenium, the late 90s and 2000s.

The fact that in the past car companies were fine and would even encourage modifications, whereas now changing the radio is treated like a war crime by the manufacturers. You can't even take some cars to a normal garage you have to take it to there specialist centre that can't actually fix your car.

You can't even change the radio in post of them. It's a bespoke fit and most of the interior wont work if you remove it :/ They did it on purpose so you have no choice but to pay them £1000s for a new one when it breaks out of warranty. Instead of just swap in a new DIN standard unit.

Yeah especially on a push bike at 6am with them oncoming tho I have a 90s bike with an older light on it I like it way better then the new ones like the effect of like a halogen light turning off also new lights have so many modes that ones just on and off but I've no idea why but I like the halogen lights and seeing and not being blinded also what happened to low beam near an oncoming car bike or something now it's so what I can see you cant what's the problem

I miss knowing what car was coming around the corner often just by the sound of it, before even seeing it. Anyone remember the sound of the Ford Kent/Velencia (or whatever they were called, rebadged Duratech or something in later life?) engine? I could ALWAYS tell when a Fiesta was close by! I miss that sound. ...and the smell of the fuel. Getting stuck behind a retro classic now gets me insanely high on nostalgia.

At the grand age of 44, it seems like I've experienced a peak in automotive development. Being efficient and beating "the ring" are very worthy but so dull. Try a basic 205 from the 80s and feel the joy and the soft, pliant suspension. I've gone from a very complicated Alfa 147 to an '08 Aygo just to get back to basics. It may not be fast or flash, but I smile every time I sweep the needle towards the red line whilst keeping my licence.

Around 1985, on a 10 day holiday back in the UK from my work in S East Asia, I rented an early 205 GTI. One of only 2 cars that have made me go .. "Wow..." on first driving. ( The other was a 911 ) . Performance, room, comfort and as you say, the suspension. I think only the French know how to do the suspension thing.

Honestly, manual transmissions really don’t help all that much with distracted driving. I drive a manual and I could still easily dick around on my phone while I’m driving, especially when I reach cruising speed and don’t have to change gears for awhile.

I wish my first car 77' MK1 golf never left.... bought it in 96' for £125 and sold it for £50! In 2003 £50 also got me a mk2 89' golf. To buy a golf of these eras now its value would be insane.

Best thing with older cars is having the ability to actually work on them. Popped the bonnet on a 20' 1 series and had no clue wtf was going on. Working on a car i.e. servicing just makes the experience so much better

I'm 26 and just bought my first "old" car. Its a 1991 W124 Mercedes 300e and I LOVE it, despite getting a lot of stick from friends for driving an "old person's car"! I had a 2015 Audi A7 and a 2019 Mustang GT before, but this car leaves me yearning to drive it more than those ever did. Its a sensory adventure every time.

I’ve owned a manual e46 m3 coupe for many many years, and cover maybe 2k miles a year in it and it really is a joy to drive and I think it was just on that verge of technology and analogue. Prices seem to slightly on the rise too which is nice to see.

Recently bought not an M3 but an E46 330i on a 51 plate and totally agree. It feels old skool enough but also very analogue. I've got cruise, climate, heated seats, airbags everywhere, all the safety aids yet the engine sounds great on start up and isn't artificially muted while it handles great on its Continentals but nowhere near as well as a modern equivalent so one can have some fun on back roads. And although they aren't rising like M3s 330is are on the slight up...😀

I loved my Landrover series lll's, I had four of them! You had to drive them with full concentration! You had to correct the steering every couple of seconds, the air con was a flap on the bulk head, the gear stick was solid metal and let you know if it was not going to go in gear. The windows opened by sliding them forward. The fuel gauge danced around and it was noisy, so no chance of falling asleep, and yes, if I saw a patch of grass I wanted to drive on it. I leant more car craft by skidding, sliding and bouncing my way around the beach and forest tracks in my old Series lll and I think that gave me an empathy with the vehicle and the road conditions. I'm about to turn 23 and have a huge longing for a classic. I live in the UK and I just feel like an old MG or triumph etc with a bit of work and love would be ideal. The temptation to get a loan and build Porsche 356 replica is insane. Not stupid power, I've never been interested in that, (fortunate enough to have driven a MK1 V8 F type R and whilst it was absolutely amazing, I don't need 500+ hp everyday) something that feels fun and connected. Something beautiful to look at, engaging to drive and just amazing in everyway. That's driving my friends. Don't get me wrong, new cars are great, but I challenge you to find a car museum or classic car showroom, within the next few weeks and tell me you don't see something that calls to you. Then go to Audi or BMW and see if you get the same feeling... ( Big fan of these brands but you get my point) anyways, peace out, love old stuff and drive what makes you smile!

Oh Man - you nailed it. The point about every drive in an old car feeling like an occasion really got me. Back in the day I had a Daimler Sovereign 4.2 (think top-of-the-line XJ6). I'd drive that thing to the gym every evening and then, when I drove home, I'd make sure I was correctly attired - with shirt and tie - because the car demanded it. I always felt like a knob getting suited and booted after my workout - but, hey - I was driving a Jaaaaag!!!

I have a Morris Minor Traveller from 1970, it is really slow by today's standards but it never fails to put a grin on my face when I drive it, its got that distinctive A-series exhaust note, a proper over-run fart, and a steering wheel big enough for a battleship! The all round visibility is absolutely amazing, (seriously, the thing has NO blindspot) and its absolutely tiny, so its a doddle to park! I honestly think we have forgotten how to make a small car, a ford fiesta is actually quite a bit bigger than the moggy!

Tractors? OK then. And yet I can relate. Old tractors (by that I mean the 11 year old John Deere 5055e on the farm) are all about controls that actually move stuff in the engine unlike a lever that sends a command to a computer to increase throttle. Unnecessary complication. They are also LOUD! I mean, I get why exhausts are quieter, but with those old machines you could easily hear the engine for miles away and you could tell immediately if something was wrong by the sound of the exhaust, rather than having a computer show a warning on the dashboard which distracts you from work. Intentional slight safety risk. There is plastic, but the plastic was molded in a way that made it durable. In the forest that 5055e would lift up dirt and the plastic body would not care. Compare that to new tractors which have cheap plastic that is guaranteed to fail much sooner than you need it too. Planned obsolescence. Finally, reparability. In the old tractors, you simply swap a broken part and be on your way. Today you have to be a hacker to bypass the computer's checks for genuine hardware and sometimes parts are never in stock to force you to go to the dealer for an overpriced repair. #RightToRepair

You almost can't find a mechanical machine around today (only mc cormick/landini and Belarus are still available). Yup. I had a 1994 Ford Taurus with the front bench seat. It wasn't a very good car but I did enjoy how roomy and comfortable it was with the bench seat. You pretty much can only get front bench seats on low end full sized pickups anymore.

Am 20 years old and bought a peugeot 208 2014 last year, it is a nice car but when I remembered driving my dad's '85 golf mk2 I decided to buy it myself and got to do it this sunday. Even though it's half the power of the pug, it just feels so good. So much visibility, I can literally see anything whereas the pug's A pillars are so damn fat they annoy me at every roundabout. It does have things to fix and it is loud inside and struggles to keep 65 mph uphill, but it's just such a nice feeling. I'm so sad I was born so late to see all these disgusting new cars with no good ideas towards the styling, as well as trying to make majority of the new released cars all electric/hybrid. Just sad the insurance is literally a scam and I can't drive the mk2 yet, but hopefully find one soon as I really want to drive it again.

I genuinely miss the trim package variants! For example, a Mk1 fiesta popular plus compared too a MK1 Fiesta Super Sport. Different wheels, engine, lights, interior, grill. Basically a whole different car. It seems like these days trim packages go on what entertainment system is in the car. Bring back proper cars, for PROPER DRIVING!

When you could sit in a car and immediately know how to operate everything without having to read a novel sized owners manual.

Rear wheel drive (yes there are still a few, but nowhere near as many as back in the day) , vacuum operated windscreen wipers, foot operated floor pump for the washers, furry dice, 8 track stereo, front bench seat that burned your arse when you jumped in on a sunny day, front drum brakes (feckin dangerous), 12 inch wheels and crossply tyres. You had to be switched on 100 percent back then :) Oh, and £50 for an engine from the scrappy that you changed yourself in just a few hours, and petrol was about 80 pence a gallon - yes, a gallon, not a litre!

30 years ago I had a mk1 Escort Van. It was simple, cheap to maintain and totally no thrills. Even newer cars that long ago were straightforward and light, so didn’t need loads of power. Sure, cars today are mighty safe, but all that solid refinement distances the driver from the physical sensations of driving. By god they’re a lot quicker when you get up them. Have fun, be safe

Made me cry, so true in every word. I know that my "old" Hyundia i30 gd 1.4 na isn't old but the basic model was such a pleasure for everyday drive. It had everything you needed nothing annoying compared to my new i30 that beeps at every single fart, no spare wheel (I'm form the countryside, I can't call road assistance!). The new long transmission maybe fun on motorways, but here are no motorways. If I had the money I would go and buy back my "old" car.

I'm quite fond of my JZZ30 Toyota Soarer vvti turbo. 1997 model, with a V160 6 speed transmission and a Haltech elite standalone. But no traction control, no slip control, lane departure warnings etc. I think there's a sweet spot between old and new.

See, I'm 44 and I only learned to drive when I was 39. I learned in a 108 (I think, I've tried to forget it). It was the most awful driving experience, for basically all the reasons in this video. By contrast...my cars since then have been an MG ZR, Ford Puma, Toyota Gen7 Celica and I currently have a V6 MG ZS. Sure, none of them were particularly powerful (even the ZS only puts out about 177bhp), but they've all been fun to drive. If you can find a decent one, or you don't mind a bit of a project, 2000-2005 is probably the best era of cars to go for - enough tech to make them perform well, not enough to make them a nightmare to maintain or turn you into a shit driver, and they're usually pretty fast and light compared with today's monstrosities.

I love my old car. I have a 1977 MGB Roadster. Yes she takes a little more effort to keep her running perfectly and she leaks in the rain. If it's slippy outside you can't drive like a tool. But on those days when it's dry and you can put the roof down and cruise the b-roads nothing better. The noise from the exhaust, the smell of the leather, the wind in your hair and flies in your teeth are all worth it. The family car is a 2024 MG HS and it's fine but the most excitement is when a decent song comes on Spotify!

Valve adjustment was a thing back in the day. Imagine spending a few hours a year after another oil change to make your engine run smooth and quiet. Not even talking about all the electrical bullshittery. Dang, I miss driving my E30 already.

I'm so happy to finally put my Skyline back on the road, didn't even do a pull since I had to empty the old gas, but just the steering feel, seating position and noise was really satisfying. But to be fair to the fake vents in the Supra MK5, I saw an interview with the main designer, and they added them in a way that aftermarket/tuners could use them for adding more cooling for high performance, so that's pretty cool.

I miss looking out of the window and actually seeing the road or the car behind me im trying not to reverse into.Using all the buttons and knobs without looking. Also having full control over the engine and power delivery. No jerky digital throttle, no pling pling when you turn on the ignition or havent buckled in already, the clicking of the turn indicator, the feeling of the road in the steering wheel, the easyness of most repairs ( changing the timing belt or the sparkplugs) etc.

That’s surprising…maybe I’m too old but I remember cars being way more high maintenance than they are now. I’m not driving around with oil and tools in the trunk, carrying spare bits, and thank god I’m not scheduling time on a weekend anymore to poke at the carburetor. …and the grease gun is no longer in the easy access oil change box.

New cars require less maintenance in the short run, however when something goes wrong they can be expensive and complicated to fix. Older cars are a lot more mechanical.

I miss my first car, a 99 mk1 fiat punto 60s team. No power steering, no electric windows, no central locking, no nothing. Simple and so much fun to drive! Rust killed it in the end, but I still miss it. But, then again, I've been brought up with classic cars, Series 1 Land Rovers, Standard Vanguards, Minis etc. and I want one of those for a similar reason. I briefly had an Austin A35 project car, it took me 1 day to completely re-wire the car!

Advance crumple zones, airbags, seatbelts, even methods of building the car for integrity have improved massively even in the last 10 years. I love my classic car, I loved my 2003 Audi, but it's nowhere near as safe as even a modern Fabia.

It's just the sheer amount of unfiltered driving pleasure. I have a 1988 E30 Mitsubishi Galant and a 2007 Dacia Logan MCV. Yes you read it right. Driving pleasure from a Dacia. Cable operated throttle, hydraulic power steering, cable operated clutch and so much more purely mechanical. I just love it! Old dinosaur engine 1.6 8v . 200k on it and still doesn't use any oil whatsoever. Timing belt is an easy saturday job with a two or three beers. Valve adjustment is a piece of cake Cheap and practical to run and it doesn't fake anything to me. Unluckily the 88 Galant will go to scrap soon. Rusted beyond repair but still got inspection for one year. Recently started poking and my good....

2:43 This is partially true. I was a fuel technician whose job it was to siphon cars which had the wrong fuel put in. Most cars don't actually have anti-siphon technology. Audis, some BMWS, All Mercedes, Seat's, all VW's, Volvo's, Citroen's, pretty much all vans. You'd be surprised. If you have a diesel car and want to siphon fuel without going into the fuel tank, just connect a pipe to your fuel filter (should be at the back left or right of your engine bay). Then turn on your ignition (without turning the engine on), wait 10 seconds, turn it off for 5 seconds then just repeat until you grab enough fuel from your car.

Turbo lag. Only encountered it once. Dad had a 2 litre turbo petrol company car insured for anyone with a full licence, which I had just got, aged 30, passing my test in a 1.1 fiesta. He wanted a go on my bike and I followed in his car with my sister. When he got to a nice straight road with ditches either side he dropped a cog on my 1200cc bike, yes bigger engine than the car I passed in, to pass someone. To keep up I dropped a cog and floored the accelerator. Turbo lag meant the power kicked in at the worst possible time and I nearly ended up in the ditch. Fortunately I reacted and got us on track without my sister noticing, but she's not particularly observant.

The turbos surge and sounds good, you hear everything you feel everything and you know your driving it, new cars are just not exciting it will be worse in 2022 when they bring in the automatic speed limiters to make you do the speed limits!
